Controller

About the Role

We are looking for a Controller to lead our accounting and finance function. You will report to the Chief Operating Officer, work closely with the CEO, and serve as the company's senior finance leader. Your guidance will directly shape how we plan, spend, and grow.

This is a hands-on role. You will run the close, own the numbers, and roll up your sleeves alongside a small team, while also bringing the judgment to advise leadership on cash, forecasts, and business decisions. You will lead a small team and manage our outside partners for tax, payroll, HR, benefits, legal, and insurance.

What You'll Do

Accounting and Close

Own the accuracy and timeliness of all accounting and financial reporting.

Lead and actively participate in month-end and year-end close, including reconciliations, journal entries, accruals, and financial statement preparation.

Deliver monthly financials to leadership within 10 business days of month end.

Review the team's work, handle complex entries directly, and serve as final approver of the close.

Forecasting and Business Partnership

Build and maintain the annual budget, cash flow forecast, and net income forecast.

Create and report financial and operational KPIs to the COO, CEO, and leadership team.

Provide clear analysis and recommendations on pricing, hiring, investments, and operations.

Cash and Banking

Manage banking relationships, credit facilities, and covenant compliance.

Oversee daily cash management and short-term cash forecasting.

Controls, Tax, and Compliance

Establish and maintain accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls, including segregation of duties and approval limits.

Oversee sales tax (including Arizona Transaction Privilege Tax), payroll tax compliance, and income tax coordination with our outside CPA firm.

Own corporate governance and entity compliance, working with legal and tax advisors.

Payroll, Benefits, and Insurance

Provide financial oversight of payroll, employee benefits, and the 401(k) plan with our outsourced providers.

Oversee the company's insurance program, renewals, and related financial matters.

Financial Systems

Own NetSuite and related financial systems.

Lead implementations, integrations, automation, and process improvements.

Team Leadership and Hiring

Lead, coach, and develop the team through clear goals, regular feedback, and cross-training.

Plan the team's structure and capacity as the company grows.

What You Bring

Required

Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.

8+ years of progressive accounting and finance experience, including at least 3 years leading an accounting team.

Experience hiring and developing accounting staff.

Strong knowledge of GAAP, financial reporting, and month-end and year-end close.

Experience with forecasting, financial analysis, cash management, and banking relationships.

Strong ERP experience, including integrations and process improvement.

Working knowledge of tax compliance, payroll accounting, benefits, retirement plans, insurance, and entity compliance.

Strong understanding of internal controls and financial risk management.

Preferred

CPA or equivalent professional accounting designation.

NetSuite experience.

Experience as the senior finance leader at a company with fewer than 200 employees.

Public accounting experience.

You'll Thrive Here If You

Are just as comfortable presenting results to the CEO as you are working through a reconciliation.

Enjoy owning the finance function end to end, without a large team behind you.

Like building processes and systems, not just maintaining them.

Explain numbers in plain language to people who are not in finance.

Want to build and develop your own team.Working Conditions

This role works primarily in an office setting with regular computer use. Extended hours may be needed during close, year-end, and tax deadlines. Reasonable accommodations are available to help individuals with disabilities perform the essential functions of the role.
