Data Engineer 1

Illumina Digital Services (IDS)

Build the data foundations that power analytics, AI, and business decisions.

Join Illumina's IDS team and help build modern data pipelines, platforms, and products that enable analytics, AI, reporting, and enterprise decision-making. This role is ideal for individuals who enjoy solving problems with data, learning new technologies, and building a career in Data Engineering.

Working alongside experienced engineers, architects, analysts, product owners, and business stakeholders, you will gain hands-on experience with cloud technologies, modern data engineering practices, and AI-assisted development while contributing to enterprise-scale solutions.

Work Environment

• •This role follows Illumina's hybrid work model and requires employees to work from the office a minimum of three days per week.
• •Collaborate with experienced engineers, architects, analysts, product owners, and business stakeholders.

What You'll Do

• •Build, test, and maintain data pipelines, transformations, and data models using modern data engineering practices.
• •Integrate data from applications, APIs, databases, cloud platforms, and file-based sources.
• •Perform data validation, reconciliation, and quality checks to ensure data accuracy and reliability.
• •Monitor and troubleshoot data pipelines and support production operations.
• •Apply engineering best practices for performance optimization, testing, version control, deployment, and documentation.
• •Participate in code reviews, Agile ceremonies, and technical discussions.
• •Collaborate across teams to deliver reliable and scalable data solutions.
• •Use AI-assisted development tools responsibly to improve productivity while maintaining quality, security, and data integrity.

What We're Looking For

We recognize that candidates may not have experience with every technology listed. We value learning agility, curiosity, problem-solving ability, and practical application demonstrated through academic projects, internships, hackathons, open-source contributions, or independent learning.

Required Qualifications

• •Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Data Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related discipline.
• •Foundational SQL and Python skills gained through coursework, projects, internships, hackathons, or independent learning.
• •Understanding of relational databases, data modeling, and ETL/ELT concepts.
• •Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail.
• •Effective communication and collaboration skills.
• •Demonstrated ownership, curiosity, integrity, adaptability, and commitment to continuous learning.

Preferred Exposure

Experience or exposure to one or more of the following is a plus:

• •Cloud platforms such as Azure, AWS, or Google Cloud.
• •Data engineering technologies such as dbt, Spark, Snowflake, Databricks, or similar platforms.
• •Git, testing frameworks, CI/CD, or software engineering best practices.
• •Data formats such as JSON, CSV, Parquet, or Delta Lake.
• •AI-assisted development tools such as GitHub Copilot, Microsoft Copilot, ChatGPT, or similar technologies.
