Join ALTEN and play a key role in the delivery of one of the UK's most significant nuclear infrastructure programmes. You will support the replication and delivery of complex secondary steelwork designs across major nuclear new-build projects, taking ownership of critical engineering deliverables and driving technical solutions from concept through to issue. Working within a multidisciplinary engineering environment, you'll engage with a broad stakeholder network, manage complex design interfaces, and contribute directly to the successful delivery of nationally important low-carbon energy projects.
Location: Bristol
On-site Requirement: 3 days on-site
Seniority: Design Manager (Level 4 Engineer)
Security Clearance: Candidates must be willing and eligible to obtain BPSS clearance.
Key Responsibilities
- Produce and manage engineering deliverables associated with Secondary Steelwork (SSW) design activities across assigned building scopes.
- Coordinate and maintain design input data, technical reports, design calculations, drawings, and project documentation.
- Lead the planning, scheduling, and delivery of engineering activities, identifying risks to quality, cost, and programme objectives.
- Manage technical interfaces with internal disciplines, suppliers, and wider project stakeholders.
- Support design change management activities including open points, requests for information, field change requests, and non-conformance reports.
- Present technical information to stakeholders and support the successful implementation of project replication strategies.
We are seeking engineers with experience in structural steelwork design and delivery within complex, highly regulated environments. The ideal candidate will be capable of operating autonomously, managing multiple engineering deliverables, and engaging confidently with both technical and project stakeholders.
Required Skills
- Degree-qualified in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, or a related engineering discipline with relevant design experience.
- Experience designing structural steelwork systems in accordance with recognised industry standards, ideally Eurocodes.
- Proven track record operating within complex self-delivery engineering environments.
- Ability to make independent engineering decisions supported by sound technical and operational analysis.
- Experience planning, managing, and delivering engineering activities to programme requirements whilst engaging with a broad stakeholder network.
Soft Skills & Collaboration
- Strong communication and presentation skills with the ability to explain complex engineering topics to diverse stakeholders.
- Collaborative approach when working across multidisciplinary engineering teams and project functions.
- Ability to identify risks, opportunities, and areas requiring operational improvement.
- Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage competing priorities and deliverables.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Engineering, or relevant technical military background with equivalent experience.
- Working knowledge of CDM 2015 requirements.
Desirable Skills
- Previous experience working within the nuclear industry or on major nuclear new-build programmes.
- Knowledge of Secondary Steelwork replication and design change management processes.
- Understanding of pressurised water reactor (PWR) technology and nuclear plant layouts.
- Experience working within highly regulated engineering environments and managing technically significant project interfaces.
