Summary
The Director of Business Development is responsible for driving profitable growth across the Engineered Products division, with primary focus on upgrade, modification, and related aerospace and defense products and services across the division’s four business segments. This role develops and executes business development and sales strategies, identifies and advances new market opportunities, builds and maintains strategic customer relationships, and supports opportunities from initial identification through proposal, negotiation, award, and transition to execution.
The Director also leads and manages the Bid & Proposal team and partners closely with Sales, Engineering, Operations, Finance, Contracts, and executive leadership to ensure opportunities are commercially sound, operationally achievable, and aligned with the division’s overall growth strategy.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Under minimal supervision and with a high degree of independent judgment, responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Develop and execute business development and market growth strategies by product line, platform, OEM, customer, geographic region, and market segment.
- Identify, qualify, and advance new business opportunities and strategic sales campaigns while maintaining visibility into pipeline status, forecasts, customer activity, risks, and required actions.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with aerospace and defense customers, OEMs, military organizations, partners, and key industry stakeholders.
- Lead customer-facing activities, including executive meetings, presentations, negotiations, business reviews, product demonstrations, and strategic account discussions.
- Lead country, customer, and account-specific business development reviews, including Rolling Action Item Lists (RAILs) and follow-up against strategic objectives.
- Lead and oversee the Bid & Proposal function, coordinating cross-functional proposal and capture activities to ensure submissions are timely, accurate, competitive, commercially viable, and responsive to customer requirements.
- Partner with Finance and the Growth Team on pricing strategies, business cases, financial models, pro forma analysis, forecasts, and other financial considerations supporting opportunity evaluation and decision-making.
- Assess market activity, customer requirements, competitors, and industry trends and translate findings into actionable growth strategies and business recommendations.
- Develop and present business development plans, proposals, capability materials, customer presentations, pipeline updates, forecasts, and other sales and marketing information.
- Support transition of awarded opportunities into execution and provide program or project management support for strategic initiatives, demonstrations, and early-stage opportunities as needed.
- Represent the company at customer meetings, domestic and international trade shows, conferences, demonstrations, and other aerospace and defense events.
- Partner with leadership in the development and execution of annual growth plans, sales objectives, and long-range business development strategies.
- Ensure activities are performed in accordance with applicable AS9120 and ISO 9001 standards, company policies, and other applicable requirements.
- Perform other business development, sales, marketing, proposal, and related duties as assigned.
Supervisory Responsibilities
- Provide direct leadership and supervision to the Bid & Proposal team and other assigned employees.
- Plan, assign, prioritize, and direct departmental work in support of business development and proposal objectives.
- Recruit, onboard, train, coach, and develop employees while establishing clear performance expectations and accountability.
- Evaluate performance, provide feedback, address performance concerns, and support employee development.
- Promote a collaborative, accountable, and customer-focused team environment.
- Ensure employees comply with applicable company safety, quality, compliance, and workplace requirements.
Education and Experience
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements below are representative of the education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities required.
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering, Business, or a related discipline required; advanced degree preferred.
- Minimum of 7+ years of progressively responsible experience in business development, sales, program management, or a related function within the aerospace and defense industry.
- Minimum of 3 years of supervisory or team leadership experience.
- Demonstrated experience developing growth strategies and managing complex sales opportunities, proposals, negotiations, and strategic customer relationships.
- Strong knowledge of aerospace and defense markets, long-cycle sales processes, and domestic and international customer environments.
- Demonstrated financial and commercial acumen, including experience with pricing, forecasting, business cases, financial analysis, and opportunity evaluation.
- Proficiency with Salesforce or comparable CRM systems; experience with ERP/MRP systems preferred.
Travel:
Up to 50% domestic travel
