Stout’s Valuation Advisory professionals help clients gain confidence by bringing clarity to complex financial and valuation matters. As part of our Business Valuation and Litigation Support Group, you will advise clients and counsel on sophisticated valuation, damages, and financial issues arising in high-stakes disputes.

As a Director, you will manage complex business valuation and litigation support engagements, working closely with senior professionals to develop analytical approaches, oversee execution, and deliver high-quality work products. You will have significant interaction with clients and counsel and will help prepare analyses and materials that may be used in mediation, arbitration, deposition, and trial. Your work will include family law, commercial litigation, shareholder disputes, and other matters involving complex financial questions.

You will also contribute to the development of the practice by building client relationships, mentoring professionals, supporting business development efforts, and participating in market-facing initiatives.

What You’ll Do:

Manage complex business valuation and litigation support engagements, including valuations of businesses, securities, ownership interests, and intangible assets

Develop engagement scope, work plans, analytical approaches, and project timelines in collaboration with Senior Vice Presidents, Managing Directors, and other senior professionals

Apply and review advanced valuation methodologies, including discounted cash flow, capitalization of earnings, guideline public company, guideline transaction, and other appropriate methods

Oversee financial modeling and analyses involving mergers and acquisitions, purchase price allocations, stock-based compensation, economic damages, and other complex financial matters

Manage income analyses, financial tracing, forensic analyses, and related assignments in litigation matters

Prepare and review valuation analyses, expert reports, schedules, exhibits, and other work products for clients, counsel, and legal proceedings

Serve as a day-to-day client contact, communicating project status, discussing analytical issues, and responding to financial and valuation questions throughout the engagement

Participate in client meetings, attorney conferences, deposition preparation, mediation or arbitration preparation, and other litigation-related activities as appropriate

Evaluate company, industry, economic, and market information and assess its relevance to valuation analyses and conclusions

Manage engagement budgets, staffing, timelines, and other project requirements

Coordinate multiple concurrent engagements while maintaining consistent technical and professional standards

Supervise and develop junior professionals through coaching, technical guidance, work review, and performance feedback

Build relationships with attorneys, corporate clients, referral sources, and other professional contacts

Support business development activities, including proposal preparation, client outreach, presentations, and networking

Contribute to recruiting, training, thought leadership, and other initiatives that support the continued development of the group

What You Bring:

6+ years of experience in business valuation, litigation support, forensic accounting, economic damages, or a related advisory field, including experience with dispute-related matters

Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics, or a related field; an advanced degree is a plus

Strong knowledge of valuation theory, financial modeling, accounting principles, and financial statement analysis

Demonstrated experience managing complex engagements or significant workstreams and supervising teams in a professional services environment

Experience preparing and reviewing valuation analyses and reports used in litigation or other contested matters

Ability to assess complex financial information, develop supportable analyses, and communicate findings clearly to clients, attorneys, and other stakeholders

Strong project management skills, including experience managing engagement scope, budgets, staffing, deadlines, and client expectations

Advanced proficiency in Excel and strong working knowledge of Word and PowerPoint

Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain technical financial concepts to financial and nonfinancial audiences

Strong judgment, analytical ability, and attention to detail

Ability to manage competing priorities and make sound decisions in deadline-driven environments

Professional presence and the ability to build productive client and referral relationships

Experience with forensic accounting, economic damages, fraud analysis, financial investigations, or expert witness support is a plus

Professional credentials such as CPA, CFA, ASA, ABV, CVA, CFF, or CFE are preferred

How You’ll Thrive:

Take ownership of engagement execution and maintain accountability for technical quality, client service, budgets, and deadlines

Build trusted working relationships with clients, attorneys, referral sources, and colleagues

Exercise sound judgment when analyzing complex or disputed financial issues

Develop junior professionals through coaching, feedback, and technical instruction

Communicate clearly and confidently in client meetings and litigation-related settings

Balance technical rigor with practical and responsive client service

Support the growth of the practice through relationship development, business development activities, and market-facing initiatives

Work effectively across teams and disciplines to address complex client matters

Work Environment:

This role operates in a hybrid to remote work environment, depending on team, engagement, and client needs.

The biggest level shifts are the move from leading the overall engagement strategy to managing execution, from being the primary senior client advisor to a day-to-day client contact, and from originating business to supporting and participating in business development. I also moved the experience threshold from 8+ to 6+ years and softened the expectation around defending expert work products, which helps create clearer separation from the Senior Vice President role.
