Director of Ambulatory Pharmacy

Cincinnati Children’s is seeking an accomplished, collaborative, and forward-thinking pharmacy leader to serve as Director of Ambulatory Pharmacy. This role will provide strategic and operational leadership for a broad ambulatory pharmacy portfolio that includes Specialty Pharmacy and outpatient pharmacy sites at Base, Liberty, Eastgate, and College Hill. The Director will oversee a staff of 83 and annual revenues of more than $250 million while helping advance access, quality, safety, financial performance, team development, and patient-family experience across ambulatory medication-use services.

Role Scope

The Director of Ambulatory Pharmacy will lead an integrated portfolio of services that connects specialty medication access, outpatient dispensing, patient counseling, payer and prior authorization support, 340B stewardship, regulatory readiness, and site-based operational excellence. The leader will partner closely with pharmacy, ambulatory, clinical, finance, information services, compliance, supply chain, and physician leaders to ensure that pharmacy services are aligned with Cincinnati Children’s mission to improve child health and transform care delivery.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic direction and daily leadership for Specialty Pharmacy and outpatient pharmacy services at Base, Liberty, Eastgate, and College Hill.
  • Advance a patient- and family-centered ambulatory pharmacy model that improves access to medications, supports adherence, and reduces fragmentation for patients with complex and chronic conditions.
  • Lead operational performance across dispensing, patient counseling, inventory management, medication access, quality improvement, and regulatory compliance.
  • Partner with ambulatory clinics and specialty service lines to expand embedded pharmacy services, strengthen provider relationships, and retain appropriate prescription volume within Cincinnati Children’s.
  • Develop, coach, and support managers, pharmacists, technicians, learners, and other team members while fostering a culture of engagement, accountability, inclusion, and continuous improvement.
  • Monitor financial performance, productivity, medication margin, payer trends, 340B opportunities, and business growth initiatives to support sustainable ambulatory pharmacy services.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable Board of Pharmacy requirements, accreditation standards, organizational policies, controlled substance expectations, and specialty pharmacy standards.
  • Lead change management efforts related to growth, technology optimization, workflow redesign, space planning, staffing models, patient capture, and service-line expansion.
  • Partner with Revenue Cycle and Finance for prior authorization, billing coordination.

Ideal Candidate Profile

The successful candidate will be a visible and trusted leader with strong ambulatory, outpatient, or specialty pharmacy experience and a demonstrated ability to lead teams through growth and operational complexity. Candidates should have at least seven years of pharmacy leadership experience or completion of a PGY2 residency program with at least four years of pharmacy leadership experience. This leader should bring sound judgment, business acumen, regulatory awareness, and the ability to build productive partnerships across clinical and operational environments. Experience with pediatric pharmacy, specialty pharmacy accreditation, 340B, medication access services, retail/outpatient pharmacy operations, or health-system pharmacy leadership is highly desirable. Candidates must have PharmD degree, and State of Ohio Pharmacist license.
