*At Securian Financial the internal position title is Compliance Dir.*

Position Overview

Securian Financial is seeking an experienced and forward-thinking Director of Regulatory Compliance to lead and continue the evolution of our enterprise regulatory compliance program. Reporting directly to the Chief Compliance Officer, this leader will have an opportunity to shape how regulatory compliance partners with our business lines, identifies emerging risks, and enables responsible growth across the organization.

This is a highly visible leadership role for someone who brings deep insurance and regulatory expertise along with the ability to lead transformation. You’ll build upon a strong foundation and established teams while advancing a more proactive, integrated and data-driven approach to compliance risk management.

What you will do:

Lead Securian’s enterprise regulatory compliance program and a team of approximately 20 associates, including leaders responsible for compliance sub-teams.

Provide oversight across a broad range of regulatory compliance activities, including life insurance and annuity product administration, securities-related activities, complaint handling and tracking, suitability and replacements, unclaimed property, and related monitoring and oversight.

Partner across Securian’s business lines and Operations teams to understand business priorities, identify regulatory risks and develop practical approaches to managing those risks.

Evaluate and evolve the Regulatory Compliance operating model, creating clarity around team responsibilities, accountabilities and ways of working.

Strengthen proactive compliance risk identification, assessment, monitoring, quantification, reporting and escalation.

Oversee the develop and enhancement of policies, training, tools and monitoring practices that support effective regulatory compliance and risk mitigation.

Translate complex regulatory requirements and compliance risks into practical business guidance that enables informed decision-making.

Anticipate regulatory developments and emerging risks and help the organization respond proactively.

Develop future compliance leaders and build organizational capabilities that position the function for long-term success.

What success looks like:

In this role, you will help move Regulatory Compliance toward an increasingly proactive and integrated model—one where responsibilities are clear, compliance teams work effectively together, and business partners view Compliance as both a trusted advisor and an effective independent risk management function. Over time, you will advance the use of consistent and increasingly automated monitoring of key compliance risks and strengthen the policies and programs needed to respond to regulatory change, emerging risks and opportunities for improvement.

What we are looking for:

We’re looking for an accomplished compliance leader who understands the complexity of operating within a highly regulated insurance environment and has successfully led meaningful change within a compliance organization.

Required qualifications:

15+ years of relevant experience in compliance, risk, legal or regulatory functions.

Significant experience within the insurance industry.

5+ years of leadership experience.

Demonstrated experience leading leaders and developing high-performing teams.

Experience influencing senior leaders and partnering across multiple business areas.

Experience navigating complex regulatory requirements and providing practical, business-oriented compliance guidance.

Strong communication and relationship-building skills, with the ability to establish credibility with both business partners and compliance professionals.

Preferred qualifications:

Experience leading significant compliance program enhancements or transformation within an insurance organization.

Experience leading teams through organizational redesign or changes to a compliance operating model.

Experience managing regulatory examinations and interactions with regulators.

Broad familiarity with individual insurance, employer voluntary benefits, specialty lines insurance and securities-related activities.

Juris Doctor (JD) degree.

A successful leader in this role will bring credibility, curiosity and a practical mindset to the work. You will be comfortable challenging existing approaches when needed, creating clarity in complex environments and bringing people along through change. Most importantly, you will help build a Regulatory Compliance organization that enables Securian Financial to move with confidence—supporting the business in growing responsibly while effectively identifying and managing regulatory risk.
