At General Motors, our product teams are redefining mobility. Through a human-centered design process, we create vehicles and experiences designed not just to be seen, but to be felt. We’re turning today’s impossible into tomorrow’s standard—from breakthrough hardware and battery systems to intuitive design, intelligent software, and next-generation safety and entertainment features.
Every day, our products move millions of people as we work to make driving safer, smarter, and more connected, shaping the future of transportation on a global scale.
About the role
As an E-Motor Manufacturing Technician, you will play a hands-on role in building, inspecting, testing, troubleshooting, and improving electric-motor components and assemblies. You will help produce high-quality stators, rotors, and completed e-motor assemblies that meet customer, product, launch, and manufacturing requirements.
This role supports GM GPS manufacturing operations in a team-based environment. You will work closely with Manufacturing Engineering, Product Engineering, Quality, Maintenance, and Operations leadership to maintain safe, stable, and capable production processes.
What you’ll do
- Safely perform assigned e-motor manufacturing operations in accordance with standardized work, job element sheets, engineering drawings, control plans, work instructions, and applicable GM requirements.
- Build, assemble, disassemble, inspect, and service e-motor components and assemblies, including stator- and rotor-related hardware.
- Perform process-specific operations such as wire and slot-liner insertion, winding and wire preparation, twisting, welding, weld inspection, varnish and oven processing, cold and hot testing, rotor pressing, balancing, magnetizing, bearing pressing, final inspection, and final testing.
- Verify part presence, configuration, workmanship, dimensions, and required electrical or functional results before releasing work to the next operation.
- Operate and monitor manufacturing equipment, fixtures, test devices, tooling, and material-handling equipment.
- Identify abnormal conditions, stop or contain the process when necessary, and promptly escalate safety, quality, equipment, or material concerns.
- Troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, electronic, tooling, fixture, and test-setup issues within the scope of the role. Partner with skilled trades, engineering, and leadership to restore stable operation.
- Perform or support in-process checks and end-of-line verification, including electrical, leak, functional, and part-presence checks, as applicable to the assigned process.
- Accurately record production, inspection, test, downtime, defect, and traceability information in approved plant systems and documents.
- Maintain complete and timely electronic records of work and test activity, and communicate results and abnormalities to engineering and operations leadership.
- Support first-time quality, defect containment, root-cause analysis, rework, scrap reduction, and corrective-action activities.
- Participate in equipment installation, debug, process trials, prototype and development builds, launch activities, and continuous-improvement projects.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area. Follow hazardous-material, waste-disposal, lockout/tagout, personal-protective-equipment, and emergency-response requirements.
- Complete required technical, process, quality, and high-voltage electrical-safety training before performing work that requires those qualifications.
- Support team cross-training and skill development by following the applicable training plan and maintaining proficiency in assigned operations.
- Recommend and implement improvements that enhance safety, quality, delivery, cost, ergonomics, uptime, and overall process capability.
Required qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Mechanical aptitude and the ability to safely use common hand, power, measurement, and assembly tools.
- Ability to read and follow standardized work, technical instructions, engineering drawings, schematics, specifications, and inspection requirements.
- Basic electrical and electronic knowledge, including the ability to identify wiring, connectors, sensors, and test-equipment conditions.
- Basic mechanical troubleshooting skills involving fasteners, bearings, presses, fixtures, motors, drives, and assembly tooling.
- Ability to use computers and plant information systems to enter data, review instructions, and communicate issues.
- Strong commitment to safety, quality, attendance, teamwork, and customer focus.
- Ability to work assigned shifts, overtime, weekends, or modified schedules as business needs require.
Preferred qualifications
- Technical certificate, associate degree, apprenticeship, or equivalent hands-on experience in automotive, electrical, mechanical, mechatronics, manufacturing, or a related discipline.
- Experience in electric-motor, propulsion-system, automotive, battery, powertrain, or high-volume manufacturing.
- Experience with stator or rotor assembly, electrical testing, balancing, pressing, welding, curing, varnish, insulation, or end-of-line testing.
- Experience troubleshooting automated equipment, sensors, fixtures, test systems, PLC-controlled processes, or electromechanical assemblies.
- Experience using calipers, micrometers, torque tools, electrical meters, insulation-resistance testers, or other process-specific measurement equipment.
- Familiarity with lean manufacturing, standardized work, problem solving, error proofing, layered audits, and GM Global Manufacturing System principles.
- Experience working in a unionized manufacturing environment and following local work rules and training requirements.
Work environment and physical requirements
- Work safely in a manufacturing environment that may include noise, moving equipment, industrial materials, electrical hazards, and temperature variation.
- Stand, walk, bend, reach, climb steps, and perform repetitive assembly or inspection activities for extended periods.
- Safely lift, carry, push, or pull materials and tools within established job and ergonomic limits.
- Wear required personal protective equipment and follow all posted safety controls.
- Maintain situational awareness around robots, presses, conveyors, rotating equipment, energized systems, and material-handling vehicles.
