The mission of The New York Times is to seek the truth and help people understand the world. That means independent journalism is at the heart of all we do as a company. It’s why we have a world-renowned newsroom that sends journalists to report on the ground from nearly 160 countries. It’s why we focus deeply on how our readers will experience our journalism, from print to audio to a world-class digital and app destination. And it’s why our business strategy centers on making journalism so good that it’s worth paying for.
Over the past two years, “The Interview” has made itself a trustworthy New York Times brand and a destination, where artists (Mick Jagger, Nicolas Cage, Charlize Theron), politicians (Zohran Mamdani, Chuck Schumer), athletes (Karl-Anthony Towns), influential figures in the media (Megyn Kelly, Andrew Schulz, Tucker Carlson), at the center of a story (Scott Pelley, Gisele Pelicot) and beyond sit down for thoughtful, wide-ranging, challenging, fun, news-making conversations about their lives and ideas. And now we are looking for the next Executive Producer to lead the show.
We're looking for a senior editorial leader with strong, relevant experience running a video show, working with hosts (we have two great ones: Lulu Garcia-Navarro and David Marchese) and leading show teams made up of talented staffers with audio and video backgrounds. You will drive the show's creative and editorial direction, and work to grow The Interview's already considerable audience across Times-owned platforms, YouTube and social media. You will be responsible for setting the editorial priorities, managing the production team that delivers the show each week and communicating with stakeholders across the newsroom on timely, impactful conversations. Because you will work closely with the staff of the New York Times Magazine, having experience in an ideas-driven magazine environment is a plus.
You are a curious, creative thinker, a stylish editor, a decisive and compassionate manager, and an excellent communicator. You should be comfortable working in video, excited by an evolving media landscape and motivated by booking big guests in important moments, whether that's the the definitive conversation with a Hollywood icon, a rising political star or a newsmaker at the center of a breaking story. You should be a fan of what The Interview has built, and excited to keep building and growing and evolving the show. You will report to the editor-in-chief of the New York Times Magazine.
This is an in-office position, based in New York City and includes regular attendance in the office four days each week. There may be some flexibility to work remotely per your departmental guidance.
Responsibilities:
Lead the overall editorial and creative strategy for The Interview, setting the editorial goals and guiding the coverage for the show
Oversee the editorial quality of each episode, ensuring strong structure, pacing, framing and tone that aligns with the overall strategic goals of the franchise and the standards of the Times
Oversee workflow to ensure that several episodes at various stages of production are being made in the smartest, most efficient and sustainable way possible
Work closely with the hosts, booker and editor to solicit and field pitches and book a compelling mix of guests
Own all expressions of the show, including onsite and off-platform, all mediums (video, audio, digital), episode packaging, titles and thumbnails, in coordination with the Audience team
Collaborate with video operations and the Shows team to shape the visual identity of The Interview, including set design, camera approach, clips and other media to enhance each episode
Collaborate with the Magazine's photo, fact-checking and copy departments
Cultivate relationships with Times journalists across the newsroom whose valuable perspectives can be invaluable during the prep phase for any given interview
Lead communication with and seek feedback from the masthead on high-profile interviews
Manage and mentor a team of producers (some with audio backgrounds, some with video backgrounds), setting clear expectations, supporting their growth, assessing performance and providing regular feedback
Work with the audience team to understand audience trends and performance analysis, translating insights into recommendations
Create a culture of productive experimentation, because the show should never get stuck in its ways and the environment we are publishing into is always changing
Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand
Basic Qualifications:
15 years of experience leading editorial teams, including significant experience running a host-driven conversational audio or video show
Strong experience working on high profile interviews in culture and politics
Highly skilled at every aspect of editing at the show level, from structuring episodes (both before and after the interview) and pacing to line editing and reviewing cuts
Experience managing and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams, including hosts, audio or video producers, audience strategists and others
Comfortable interpreting platform analytics and audience insights to inform editorial decisions
Preferred Qualifications:
Strong organization and communication skills, with the ability to make decisions and set priorities in a fast-moving news environment
