Fabric Worker (Drapery Fabricator)

Summary

This position is located in the Architect of the Capitol, Office of the Chief of Operations; Executive Director of Facilities Operations, Senate Office Buildings; Division Director Tenant Services Division, Upholstery Branch. The Fabric Worker (Drapery Fabricator) will be responsible for fabricating and servicing drapery.

Duties

TOUR OF DUTY: Monday – Friday (First Shift) 5:30 am – 2 pm MAJOR DUTIES: Drapery Fabrication Work: Fabricates, installs, and services drapery. Without supervision, manufacturers drape panels, top treatments, and tie-backs. Upholsters hard comic boards. Assembles and services drapery track and rod systems. Performs operation of industrial sewing machines and other equipment, without supervision. Hand sews all types of fabrics for window treatments. Uses equipment to include irons and steamers. Performs shop upkeep to include daily sweeping of floor, general cleaning and basic maintenance of the shop equipment. Upholsterer Tasks: Performs the less complex upholstery tasks involving stripping and tacking chair coverings under supervision. Without supervision, cleans and conditions leather and fabric furniture. Operates a furniture cleaning machine, without supervision. Rebuilds seats and backs by using old cover or established pattern as a guide. Removes old covering and padding, checks and repairs seat frame; secures and ties seat springs; cuts and sews new covering and adds padding to seat, adjusting amount to ensure proper fit of covering. Uses required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as appropriate. Performs other related duties as assigned. PHYSICAL EFFORT: Standing at worktables to measure, mark, and cut materials and sitting for long periods while operating sewing machines or doing hand sewing. The work includes a considerable amount of stooping, bending, and kneeling, and continually uses arms, hands, and fingers in pulling and positioning materials, sewing, and using tools such as shears and electric knives. Drapery Fabricators may occasionally work in cramped areas, on ladders and scaffolds, and overhead. Frequently lifts and carries items that weigh up to 50 pounds. WORKING CONDITIONS: Shop is adequately lighted, ventilated and heated. Incumbent is subject to cuts, scratches, bruises and other minor injuries or irritation from handling tools. Incumbent is also subject to irritation caused by dyes, dust and lint from fabrics. Incumbent is exposed to loud noises from sewing machines in the work area.

Qualifications

You must meet all eligibility and qualification requirements by the closing date of the job announcement. You must meet the following SCREEN-OUT(S) required for this position. Ability to do the work of a Frabric Worker (Drapery Fabricator) such as textile knowledge with sewing, design, and installation skills to create custom draperies, curtains, and other window treatments without more than the normal supervision.
