We’re looking for a Junior Field Service Engineer to join our team in Italy. This is an entry-level opportunity for someone with strong engineering fundamentals, curiosity and enthusiasm for problem-solving who wants to develop their skills in a customer-facing, field-based environment. You don’t need to arrive knowing everything. Bring your technical foundation, curiosity and willingness to learn.

What you’ll do

You’ll work directly with our customers and collaborate with colleagues across Service & Support, Applications, Sales, Marketing, Customer Service and Quality.

Your responsibilities will include:

• •Supporting the installation, maintenance, repair and upgrade of Illumina instrument systems
• •Troubleshooting technical issues and providing on-site assistance to customers
• •Helping coordinate service requests and working towards effective, timely resolutions
• •Supporting new instrument installations, including facility inspections and instrument validation
• •Maintaining appropriate service-parts inventory to support successful customer interventions
• •Working with sales and marketing colleagues around new system placements, upgrades and contract renewals
• •Building strong relationships with customers and internal partners
• •Participating in departmental projects while building your technical knowledge and experience

We want to emphasise that this is a junior, entry-level engineering position . Rather than looking for someone who has already mastered every aspect of field service engineering, we’re interested in candidates who bring a strong technical foundation and the motivation to develop. You may have recently completed your MSc degree within a relevant Engineering field , OR you may have completed a BSc degree with some relevant field experience.

We’d particularly welcome:

• •An engineering or related technical background
• •An interest in hands-on troubleshooting and working with complex instrumentation
• •Exposure to optics and lasers
• •Familiarity with Linux, networked systems or general IT would be advantageous
• •Strong communication and customer-facing skills
• •The ability to stay organised and composed when solving problems
• •A collaborative mindset and genuine appetite to learn

What you’ll need

As this is a field-based role:

• •You must be living in Italy
• •A valid driving licence in Italy is essential
• •You need the flexibility to travel up to 80%
• •Fluent Italian and English are essential
• •Candidates based in Campania or Puglia are preferred, although other locations in Italy will be considered

The estimated base salary range for the Field Service Engineer, Italy role based in Italy is EUR 29,000 - 43,400.

The range reflects long‑term growth in the role; therefore, most candidates are hired between the minimum and middle of the range. Placement depends on experience, skills, location, and internal equity. This salary range applies to the primary posting location listed above. Should the level or location of the role change during the hiring process, the applicable base pay range will be updated accordingly. Compensation ranges for other locations will differ to reflect local market competitiveness and will be shared with candidates if applicable during the recruitment process.

Additionally, all employees are eligible for one of our variable cash programs (bonus or commission) and eligible roles may receive equity as part of the compensation package.
