Exciting Growth Ahead! We're excited to announce that we'll be opening our new West Essex YMCA in December 2026 ! As we get closer to our opening date, we'll be adding a variety of new positions across multiple departments. Essential Functions:

  • Leads energizing, fun, safe, and educational group classes, as directed by the supervisor, to accomplish the YMCA mission and goals.
  • Asks and answers questions from program participants and members to support them in achieving their goals related to health and well-being.
  • Maintains working knowledge of wellness and trends to provide effective information and support to members.
  • Instructors are expected to adhere to the scheduled format and description of the class.
  • Builds effective, authentic relationships with members; helps members and program participants connect with each other and the YMCA.
  • Observes and adjusts approach to support all participants’ capabilities, physical conditions, health, and culture.
  • Celebrates achievement of program participants related to program and personal goals, mastering of specific skills or overall health and well-being.
  • Follows YMCA policies and procedures; responds to emergency situations.
  • Keep accurate class attendance record.
  • Contact supervisor with any equipment issues.
  • Music selection must be appropriate and in line with the YMCA’s position as both a community and family-based organization.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements/Qualifications:

  • Current required group fitness certification from a nationally recognized organization such as YMCA Foundations of Group Exercise, AFAA, ACE, IFTA, NETA, and/or AAAI/ISMA.
  • Minimum one year of experience teaching group wellness classes preferred.
  • Ability to teach two or more class formats desired.
  • Certifications subject to annual audit.
