Description

Lexington Sporting Club is seeking reliable and knowledgeable Flag Football Referees to officiate games for our youth NFL FLAG Football League. Referees will be responsible for enforcing league rules, maintaining a safe and positive environment for players, keeping official game scores, and communicating effectively with coaches and the League Director.

This position is ideal for individuals with a strong understanding of football who enjoy working with youth athletes. Prior officiating experience is preferred but not required. All referees must complete the required NFL FLAG referee training prior to officiating any games.

Schedule

League games are played on Sundays, with the typical game-day schedule running from approximately 12:00 PM–5:00 PM. Referees will generally be assigned approximately 3–5 games per Sunday, depending on the league schedule and staffing needs. Availability for Sunday league play is required.

Reporting Relationship

Flag Football Referees will report to the Flag Football League Director and are expected to follow all league rules, NFL FLAG rules, and Lexington Sporting Club policies applicable to the league.

Requirements

Game Officiating

  • Officiate youth flag football games in accordance with NFL FLAG rules and league policies
  • Enforce rules consistently and fairly throughout each game
  • Maintain control of the game while creating a positive experience for players and coaches
  • Make clear and confident calls during gameplay
  • Explain rules and calls to coaches when appropriate

Game-Day Responsibilities

  • Arrive at least 15 minutes prior to the start of your first assigned game
  • Ensure the field is set up with the necessary equipment for a safe playing environment
  • Be prepared and properly dressed for all assigned games
  • Conduct a basic safety check of the assigned field prior to the start of play and report any hazards or concerns to the League Director
  • Ensure the playing area is reasonably safe and free of obvious hazards before beginning a game
  • Keep the official score for each game
  • Ensure games begin and end on schedule
  • Work approximately 3–5 games during a typical Sunday assignment
  • Communicate any scheduling or game-day concerns to the League Director

Player Safety & Conduct

  • Prioritize the safety and well-being of all players
  • Monitor player conduct and address unsafe or inappropriate behavior when necessary
  • Report injuries, significant incidents, disciplinary concerns, or other issues to the League Director
  • Help maintain a positive and respectful environment for players, coaches, and families

Professionalism & Communication

  • Treat players, coaches, families, and fellow officials with professionalism and respect
  • Remain calm and professional when addressing disagreements or challenging situations
  • Communicate effectively with the League Director and other referees
  • Represent Lexington Sporting Club in a positive manner while working league games

Qualifications

  • Must be at least 16 years of age
  • Must be available to officiate games on Sundays
  • Must complete required NFL FLAG referee training before officiating
  • Strong understanding of football rules and gameplay
  • Prior referee or officiating experience preferred
  • Ability to make confident, consistent decisions during games
  • Ability to work effectively with youth athletes ages 5–12
  • Reliable and punctual
  • Professional demeanor and strong communication skills
  • Ability to stand, walk, jog, and move around the field for the duration of games

Equipment & Attire

  • Lexington Sporting Club will provide official referee shirts and referee flags
  • Referees are responsible for providing their own whistle and appropriate athletic footwear
