POSITION SUMMARY:

Delivers a high-quality child development program, ensuring the academic and social development of scholars throughout the program. Provides direction for the program’s daily activity, implements program curriculum, and mentors staff. Provides a quality experience to scholars and parents that focuses on the YMCA values: Caring, Honesty, Respect, and Responsibility.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

• •Implements curriculum and program activities within the established guidelines, ensuring the academic and social development of scholars.
• •Serves as a positive role model, nurturing children through purposeful programming dedicated to building achievement and belonging in youth and relationships within families.
• •Supervises scholars, classroom, or site, as well as all activities, breaks, and transitions, including ADA accommodations where appropriate.
• •Follows all policies and procedures, including those related to medical and disciplinary situations, child abuse prevention and emergencies.
• •Continuously scans a variety of environments and surrounding areas for potential hazards and takes appropriate action to remove or avoid them and informs senior staff.
• •Makes ongoing, systematic observations and evaluations of each child, monitoring their educational and social progress and making necessary recommendations for adjustments.
• •Cultivates positive relationships and maintains effective communication with parents through program activities, family nights, parent conferences, etc.
• •Consistently supports classroom and behavior management to develop a safe and productive learning environment through positive reinforcement techniques.
• •Mentors aides and entry-level teachers.
• •Maintains program site and equipment.
• •Maintains required program records and assists in gathering information for the scholar’s portfolio, such as anecdotal observations, art artifacts, and other record keeping.
• •Attends staff meetings and completes all assigned online and in-person trainings.
• •Maintains a positive attitude towards scholars, parents, coworkers, school personnel, school, and site director
• •Assist scholars with homework.
• •Works with the site director to identify scholar needs and develop instructional plans and practices to best support scholars.
• •Supports classroom procedures/functions, including scholar attendance and check-in/out.
• •Attends field trips and other special events.
• •Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

• •Meets educational and experience qualifications established by state law - completion with passing grades of at least six (6) postsecondary semester units of specified early childhood education classes or have a valid Child Development Assistant permit issued by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing. A teacher hired with six (6) units must complete at least two additional units each semester until fully qualified. Units specified shall include courses covering child growth and development, or human growth and development; child, family and community, or child and family; and program/curriculum.
• •Must be at least 18 years of age.
• •Knowledge of acceptable childcare and day camp practices.
• •Demonstrates initiative to plan, lead and participate in activities.
• •All required online training must be completed before starting work.

Certifications (must be maintained and current at all times) :

• •CPR & First Aid certifications through a nationally recognized organization.
• •Mandated Reporter certification.
• •Germ Management through California Department of Pesticide Regulation.
• •Must have Health and TB clearance.
• •Must have up to date TDAP, MMR and Influenza vaccinations.
• •Criminal records clearance.
