Help Animals Find the Foster Homes They Need

At Asheville Humane Society, foster families play an important role in providing animals with the care, comfort, and support they need outside of the shelter. Whether an animal needs time to recover, additional care, or a break from the shelter environment, our foster program helps give them the best opportunity to thrive.

As our Foster Placement Coordinator, you'll help connect animals in need with the right foster homes. You'll work closely with our Foster, Medical, Behavior, and Operations teams to identify animals who would benefit from foster care, coordinate placements, and support foster families throughout the process.

If you enjoy working with animals and people, are organized, and can think creatively to solve problems in a fast-paced environment, we'd love to meet you. Previous shelter experience is a plus, but not required.

What You'll Do

Foster placements and coordination

  • Match animals in need with available foster homes based on each animal's needs and the foster family's capabilities.
  • Work with Medical, Behavior, and Operations teams to identify animals who would benefit from foster placement.
  • Coordinate animal pick-ups and returns, including preparing supplies and medications and communicating medical and behavioral care plans to foster families.
  • Collaborate with the Foster Team and Senior Operations Manager to coordinate foster returns and ensure appropriate kennel space.

Foster family support and outreach

  • Screen, train, and provide ongoing support to new and existing foster families.
  • Respond promptly and professionally to foster inquiries and program-related communications.
  • Create and distribute foster pleas through email and social media to help increase successful placements.
  • Communicate clearly and compassionately with foster families about animal health, behavior, and care needs.

Animal care and program support

  • Assist the Foster Veterinary Medical Team with animal handling and medication preparation as needed.
  • Follow humane animal handling practices and help maintain a safe, clean environment.
  • Maintain accurate records of animals in foster care, animals awaiting placement, and foster family information and availability.
  • Contribute creative ideas and solutions to improve foster placements, outreach, and caregiver support.
  • Obtain and maintain Certified Euthanasia Technician (CET) certification and perform associated duties.
  • Perform other duties that support the mission and daily operations of Asheville Humane Society.

Requirements

  • Ability to work independently, manage multiple priorities, and meet deadlines
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to work professionally and collaboratively with staff and volunteers
  • Previous experience working in an animal shelter or similar environment
