Full Stack Engineer, Product Platform

Remote, US

About Nametag

Nametag helps companies verify the real person behind high-risk workforce actions, from account recovery to identity checks, before attackers can exploit the gap.

Deepfakes, social engineering, and stolen credentials have made "who is actually on the other side of this request?" a critical infrastructure problem. We are building the identity verification and account protection layer companies use to answer that question quickly, securely, and with less friction for real users.

The Role

We are looking for a Full Stack Engineer to own the platform foundations everything else at Nametag is built on.

Most engineering roles here ship features. This one owns the substrate: the data model, the Postgres layer beneath it, the public APIs our customers build against, the multi-region architecture that lets us serve customers who cannot let data leave their jurisdiction, and the governance machinery that makes our claims about data handling true rather than aspirational.

That last part is not a compliance footnote. We hold government-issued identity documents, selfies, and biometric signals. Customers ask us exactly where that data lives, who can reach it, how long we keep it, and what happens when they ask us to delete it — and their auditors ask again, in writing. Retention and deletion have to actually execute, including in replicas, derived tables, caches, and backups, which is where most deletion guarantees quietly fail. Tenant isolation has to be enforced by the data layer, not by every query remembering to filter correctly. Building those guarantees into the platform, so that product engineers get them by default instead of having to be careful, is the central work of this role.

Multi-region is the other structural piece. Serving customers with data residency requirements means region-aware routing, storage, and failover, and a data model that knows which rows are allowed where. It's the kind of architecture that is much cheaper to get right early than to retrofit, and you'll be shaping it.

You'll also own our public API surface — design, versioning, deprecation, and the discipline of not breaking customers who integrated two years ago and have no plans to change.

This is a full stack role in the real sense: the center of gravity is backend and data, but you'll build the internal tooling, admin surfaces, and operational dashboards that make the platform legible to the rest of the company. It suits an engineer who finds correctness under constraint more interesting than shipping the next screen.

What You'll Do

Own the data layer

Own Postgres: schema design, migrations, indexing, query performance, connection management, and the operational health of the database under load.

Design data models that make tenant isolation and data classification structural rather than conventional.

Run migrations on live systems without downtime or data loss, including the large and awkward ones.

Build data governance into the platform

Implement retention, deletion, and minimization as enforced mechanisms, and verify they reach derived data, replicas, caches, and backups.

Build access control and audit logging that scope and record access to sensitive data as a byproduct of normal operation.

Produce the evidence that compliance obligations require directly from the systems, rather than reconstructing it by hand.

Partner with security and GRC to turn contractual and regulatory commitments into technical controls that hold.

Build for multiple regions

Design and extend region-aware architecture: routing, storage, replication, and failover.

Enforce data residency in the platform, so a row that must stay in a region cannot leave it through an ordinary code path.

Handle the operational reality of multi-region — consistency, latency, deploys, and debugging something that only reproduces in one region.

Own the API surface

Design public APIs that are coherent, predictable, and pleasant to integrate against.

Own versioning, deprecation, and backwards compatibility. Customers do not upgrade on your schedule.

Build the authentication, authorization, rate limiting, and idempotency behavior that production APIs need.

Operate and enable

Operate what you build, and debug complex issues across services, data, and infrastructure.

Build internal tooling and admin surfaces that give the rest of the company visibility into the platform.

Improve reliability, observability, testing, and deployment. Review code and raise the technical bar.

What We're Looking For

Work authorization required: Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States for any employer without current or future need for visa sponsorship.

You do not need to match every bullet. We care most about breadth, pragmatism, and comfort working against systems you don't control.

5+ years building and operating production backend systems.

Deep PostgreSQL experience — schema design, query optimization, and migrations on live systems with real data.

Strong backend skills in Go, Node.js, Python, Java, or similar, plus enough frontend ability to build internal tooling in React or a comparable framework.

Experience designing and maintaining APIs used by real customers, including the versioning and compatibility discipline that entails.

Hands-on cloud experience, AWS preferred, including storage, IAM, and encryption primitives.

Experience handling sensitive or regulated data where access control, retention, and deletion were hard requirements rather than aspirations.

Judgment about correctness: idempotency, safe retries, failure handling, and the failure modes that only appear under load.

Clear communication and good judgment in a remote, cross-functional team.

Bonus Points

Experience building or operating multi-region or data-residency-constrained systems.

Experience with multi-tenant isolation at the data layer.

Experience with biometric privacy regimes such as BIPA or GDPR, as an implementer.

Experience in a SOC 2, ISO 27001, or similarly audited environment.

Experience with identity, authentication, account recovery, fraud prevention, fintech, or security products.

Strong production incident, observability, or reliability experience.

What We Value

High ownership. You see what needs doing and do it.

Technical judgment. You make systems simpler, safer, and easier to operate.

Speed with care. We move quickly because attackers move quickly, but we do not cut corners on trust or security.

Kindness and integrity. Trust starts with how we work with each other.

Compensation

Nametag is a founding member of the Open Imperative and is committed to pay equity in technology. Final compensation is based on role, level, skills, experience, and education. Your recruiter or hiring manager can share more during the process.

Culture and Benefits

Nametag is a remote-first team with regular in-person time to stay connected.

Remote-first, US-based team

Quarterly team offsites

Flexible schedules

Meaningful equity ownership

Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision benefits

Flexible paid time off

New computer hardware and equipment
