The Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) invites applications for a Full-time Principal Faculty position to teach Filmmaking in the undergraduate program Film & Video within the Department of Media Arts.

The ideal candidate will be rooted in storytelling and have a holistic approach to filmmaking. The Faculty will teach a range of visual storytelling tools, technologies, and innovative ideations. Faculty will work closely with the Department Chairs and Film Centre Director to ensure the program remains vibrant, relevant, and responsive to conceptual developments and emerging technologies. Strong organizational, collaborative, and professional skills are required. A successful applicant will have a deep passion for education and possess a strong desire to

advance new technologies into the curriculum. Candidates should have expertise in either narrative fiction, documentary, or experimental film, and maintain an active professional creative practice by engaging in meaningful research and

creative work.

About Film and Video at MICA:

At MICA, students discover how to tell stories through the lens of independent filmmaking. Film students are taught the skills, empowered with resources and mentorship to create films and media productions in their own voice. Students are challenged to create meaningful work with artistic integrity and social purpose.

MICA’s Film & Video Program offers opportunities to explore documentary, experimental, and fictional filmmaking, through analog and digital processes. Each student is encouraged to push creative boundaries and develop a portfolio. The program emphasizes student centered storytelling, learning a holistic approach to filmmaking, understanding and demonstrating through hands-on learning and practice the roles throughout the entire production pipeline. Our curriculum covers creative and technical implementation of industry-standard software, emerging digital and trusted legacy analog cinematic tools, and industry-standard stages of production to prepare students for large collaborative productions and small independent projects.

Through Baltimore’s vibrant film community, students create valuable real-world opportunities and networks to launch their careers as visual storytellers.

The shared Johns Hopkins University (JHU) and MICA Film Centre is situated inside the historic Centre Theatre in the Station North Arts & Entertainment District, a neighborhood adjacent to MICA's main campus. Students studying at the Film Centre engage with a collaborative network of media practitioners, and gain from their immersion in Baltimore’s vibrant arts scene as they prepare for sustainable careers in film and media. The Centre offers a full suite of production and post-production resources and houses the college’s main sound stage.

Job Description:

Full-time Principal Faculty teach 3 courses per semester, ranging from introductory First Year Experience (FYE) to graduate coursework, participate in departmental service, undertake committee membership, and are expected to maintain an ongoing professional practice.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Teaching 6 studio classes per academic year, (3 Fall, 3 Spring)
  • Teach a range of courses in Undergraduate Film & Video or college wide related courses
  • Work collaboratively with program Faculty, Department Chairs and Film Centre staff to meet student academic needs
  • Mentor and advise students, fostering their creative and professional development.
  • Contribute to departmental initiatives, including but not limited to program
  • development, assessment, strategic planning, and admissions.
  • Active participation in institutional service including curriculum and program
  • development, assessment, student programs and strategic planning; and college-wide committees and initiatives that promote shared governance
  • Maintain an active professional practice and/or research agenda that informs teaching and contributes to the field

Minimum Requirements:

  • A terminal degree (MFA, PhD) in Film, Media Production, Video Art or related field (or equivalent professional experience)
  • 3 years or more of experience teaching at the college level with a passion for education
  • A record of professional creative accomplishment in filmmaking showing technical and conceptual expertise, as well as recognition through film festivals, distribution, screenings/exhibitions or other avenues.
  • Proficiency with relevant digital industry-standard production software including the Adobe Creative Suite. As well as command of digital equipment including cameras, sound stage control panels, and editing suite hardware.
  • Strong communication, demonstration, and facilitation skills
  • Expertise in either narrative fiction, documentary or experimental film
  • Demonstrated knowledge of film theory and history
  • Strong desire to integrate new technologies and equipment into practice and education
  • Expertise with core film and video industry production frameworks (pre through post production)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in virtual production and real-time environments
  • Experience in visual effects and computational/AI-enabled creative tools
  • Proficiency with 16mm film cameras and film editing
  • Experience with evolving distribution and audience platforms.

Additional Information: The faculty are represented by the SEIU Local 500.

Salary: Commensurate with experience and college policy ranging from $56,246 to 146,325.
