Job Description

At General Motors, our product teams are redefining mobility. Through a human-centered design process, we create vehicles and experiences that are designed not just to be seen, but to be felt. We’re turning today’s impossible into tomorrow’s standard —from breakthrough hardware and battery systems to intuitive design, intelligent software, and next-generation safety and entertainment features.

Every day, our products move millions of people as we aim to make driving safer, smarter, and more connected, shaping the future of transportation on a global scale.

The Role

The General Assembly Manufacturing Engineering Group Manager (EGM) leads a team of Compartment Manufacturing Engineers (CMEs) responsible for product manufacturability, assembly strategies, and program readiness. The team co-develops GM’s next generation of vehicles, including electric, hybrid, autonomous, and semi-autonomous products, and represents manufacturing requirements in product design and cross-functional decisions.

In this centralized Product Interface role, the EGM translates manufacturing and business strategies into clear team objectives, operating plans, and engineering priorities. The EGM exercises independent judgment on key technical decisions, guides the team through complex problems, and engages specialized experts to develop practical, innovative solutions.

The EGM leads manufacturing integration for an assigned SMT area and partners with Product Engineering (PE), packaging, vehicle design, automation, tooling, execution, plant launch, and program management teams. The role aligns stakeholders on product and process trade-offs, resolves competing requirements, and supports global collaboration, including indirect support for China, Korea, and South America.

The EGM is accountable for the team’s technical deliverables and represents the needs of assembly plants and plant operators. The manager sets direction, delegates ownership, removes barriers, and develops CMEs’ capabilities to deliver safe, efficient assembly and successful vehicle launches.

What You'll Do

Set the team’s product manufacturability and assembly strategy priorities. Influence Product Engineering (PE) to deliver buildable products, reduce BEC, and support program MCPU targets through integrated part design, Design for Assembly (DFA), and part elimination.

Lead design-for-automation strategy with automation teams, suppliers, PE, and technical specialists. Establish ownership for ideation, product enablers, business-case development, and implementation readiness; promote knowledge sharing and adoption across programs.

Direct development and review of the vehicle build Sequence of Operations using BOE and BOP Level 1 as guiding templates. Resolve product, tooling, and process trade-offs and minimize assembly plant changes where feasible to reduce cost and risk.

Champion operator safety and efficient assembly. Ensure the team identifies build-related human factors and ergonomic risks, partners with the ergonomics team, and drives issues to resolution.

Establish clear ownership, timing, and technical review expectations for PFMEAs, Lessons Learned, Advanced Program Health Checks, and Investment Assumptions. Ensure deliverables inform program decisions and that risks and open actions are addressed.

Ensure the team supports RPLS mitigation and coordinates timely technical action with responsible stakeholders to improve vehicle safety.

Guide CMEs in scoping complex problems, analyzing root causes, and developing short- and long-term countermeasures. Exercise independent technical judgment, engage subject-matter experts, and ensure leadership reviews communicate evidence, alternatives, risks, and recommended actions.

Develop CMEs through clear assignments, ongoing coaching, technical training, and meaningful development plans aligned with the applicable ME and CME leveling guides. Delegate decision-making appropriate to each role and strengthen independent problem solving, cross-functional influence, and knowledge sharing.

Maintain a safe, inclusive, diverse, and harassment-free work environment. Model integrity and create an environment where employees can raise concerns and respectfully challenge decisions.

Foster employee engagement, open communication, and constructive feedback. Build strong relationships across PE, manufacturing execution, plant launch, and program management to strengthen ownership and timely issue resolution.

Provide technical leadership and mentorship without replacing CME ownership of assigned work. Guide experienced engineers in resolving non-standard problems and serving as technical resources for less experienced colleagues.

Manage day-to-day team activities by setting objectives, prioritizing assignments, reviewing results, coaching performance, and developing team members. Adjust workload and available resources to changing program needs and escalate unresolved constraints with clear recommendations.

Drive continuous improvement and digitization of CME work. Establish practical processes that improve engineering efficiency, share lessons across programs, and support manufacturing and company strategies.

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering or equivalent. ·
  • 8+ years of manufacturing and/or manufacturing engineering experience in program execution or an assembly plant.
  • Experience supporting multiple vehicle launches.

Advanced knowledge and broad experience in General Assembly manufacturing engineering, with the ability to integrate requirements across disciplines and engage specialized experts when needed.

Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to guide teams through complex, non-standard problems, evaluate alternatives, and implement effective short- and long-term countermeasures.

Strong oral and written communication skills, with the ability to present technical findings, risks, and strategies at all organizational levels and influence product design decisions that support assembly plant needs.

Demonstrated ability to lead engineering teams and multiple complex projects, translate business strategies into operating plans, establish priorities, and exercise independent judgment with accountability for results.

Demonstrated initiative to improve outcomes, resolve competing cross-functional requirements, and support broader manufacturing objectives beyond assigned responsibilities.

Proven project management skills, including setting clear deliverables, managing risks and dependencies, and developing these capabilities in others.
