Job Summary
Monday-Friday, 11am – 7:30pm
- Summary
- Responsible for preparing tissue specimens by processing, embedding, performing microtomy, and mounting tissue sections on glass slides for microscopic examination and analysis. Responsible for training new staff, troubleshooting issues, and escalating concerns to the Senior Technologist or Supervisor as needed.

Essential Functions
- Trains new technologists and technicians on proper procedures and techniques, evaluates new technology for clinical application, and assists with updating procedure manuals for laboratory inspections and accreditation.
- Troubleshoots issues and escalates concerns to Senior Technologists or Supervisors as necessary.
- Processes, embeds, and sections tissue for microscopic examination.
- Embeds complex cases that deviate from routine embedding procedures.
- Performs specialized histologic procedures, as applicable, including nerve testing, enzyme histochemistry, immunohistochemistry (IHC), and other advanced techniques.
- Performs frozen sections, as required.
- Performs preventative maintenance and quality control procedures, including oiling and cleaning microtomes, cleaning tissue processors, and changing staining solutions.
- Ensures appropriate use of personal protective equipment (PPE) to maintain employee safety at all times.
- Maintains accurate case identification and ensures appropriate specimen tracking throughout the entire process to support patient safety.
- Follows hospital and laboratory policies and safety practices and maintains a safe, clean, and organized work area.

Licenses and Credentials
One of the following certifications is required:
- Histotechnician [HT(ASCP)] – American Society for Clinical Pathology Board of Certification (ASCP-BOC)
- Histotechnologist [HTL(ASCP)] – American Society for Clinical Pathology Board of Certification (ASCP-BOC)
- Experience
- Histology experience 2-3 years required
- Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- - Must possess fundamental knowledge of basic histotechnique to include fixation, decalcification, processing, embedding, and routine staining.
- - Ability to troubleshoot issues, train new staff, and manage problems in an effective and organized manner.
- - Maintains and updates clinical knowledge and skills.
