Teaching at Canadian Academy:

Canadian Academy teachers inspire minds and nurture compassion by providing a rich and engaging programme that develops students’ skills, promotes curiosity and love of learning, and prioritizes well-being. All students follow the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (MYP) in Grades 6-10, and most students pursue the IB Diploma Programme (DP) in Grades 11 & 12. Teaching and learning are enriched by opportunities for exploration in the arts, athletics, outdoor education, service, and more.

CA is a highly collaborative professional environment, where innovation is encouraged and student learning and well-being drive everything we do. Subject teams work closely together and learn from one another, and opportunities for professional development abound. A low student-teacher ratio and a stimulating, well-resourced, technology-rich environment make this an exceptional place to teach. Our teachers get to know their students well, both in and out of the classroom, and work together to ensure that every student is appropriately challenged and supported.

We are now seeking an inspirational, experienced IB MYP Design teacher to begin in August 2027.

Position Summary:

At CA, MYP Design is a required subject for all students in Grades 6-8 and optional in Grades 9 & 10; students in Grades 7-10 choose from an ever-evolving range of elective Design offerings that include both Product and Digital Design options. CA boasts several dedicated Design teaching spaces, including a Robotics hub. State-of-the-art resources that support teaching and learning include 3D printers, laser cutters, woodworking equipment, Adobe suite, and much more. A departmental technician supports the work of the Design teachers.

Robotics is a growing area of strength and ambition at CA. We are looking for a teacher who will lead, grow, and build our robotics program, both within the Design curriculum and through our co-curricular robotics offerings. Our goal is for CA students to participate in competitive robotics. Including internationally, and the successful candidate will play a central role in making that happen. For the right person, there is also the possibility of growing into a departmental leadership role.

Who are we looking for?

The ideal candidate will be a lifelong learner with an innovative mindset, a wide range of technical skills in product and/or digital design, a creative approach to curriculum development, and a track record of encouraging and supporting students to pursue their individual and unique interests and make transdisciplinary connections in design and the related STEAM fields.

We are looking for someone who is genuinely excited by the prospect of growing a robotics program: designing robotics learning within the curriculum, coaching and inspiring student teams, and taking them to compete within and beyond Japan. We also seek someone with the confidence and design studio management skills to allow students at all grade levels to develop their key skills across the design cycle and to work independently in a range of material areas.

Position Responsibilities:

Teach IB MYP Design courses in Grades 6-10

Lead, grow, and build CA's robotics program, within the curriculum and through co-curricular robotics

Coach and support student robotics teams, with the goal of participating in competitive robotics through APAC

Collaborate effectively with a small team of departmental colleagues

Demonstrate a deep understanding of and passion for Design education

Connect with and inspire students to outstanding levels of achievement in Design

Lead at least one Design-related co-curricular activity per year

Serve as homeroom Advisor for a group of approximately 10 Middle School students

Supervise Personal Projects/Extended Essays as needed to support the academic program

For teachers with the relevant interest and experience, there is the possibility of teaching another MYP or DP subject

Required Qualifications:

Minimum of 2 years of experience teaching Design in a secondary school setting

Demonstrated experience in robotics (for example, teaching robotics, coaching or mentoring student robotics teams, or leading a robotics program)

Must be eligible to obtain a visa to work in Japan

Must have a teaching certification and/or relevant academic qualification

Preferred Experience and Qualities (in no particular order):

5+ years of relevant teaching experience

Successful experience teaching Design in the IB MYP

Experience coaching students in competitive robotics, including travel to and participation in competitions

Interest in, or experience with, departmental leadership

Advanced degree in Education, Design, or related field

Knowledge and understanding of the International Baccalaureate programmes

Strong leadership, facilitation, and collaboration skills.

Excellent communication skills, with the ability to engage effectively with students, parents, and colleagues.

Strong organizational and time management skills.

Demonstrated ability to support the diverse learning needs of students in a class and to collaborate effectively with Learning Support specialists

Demonstrated enthusiasm for connecting with students beyond the classroom, through athletics, co-curriculars, etc.

Demonstrated ability to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a team

Ability to problem-solve and mediate conflicts effectively.

All Canadian Academy teachers are expected to:

Create a vibrant classroom environment that nurtures meaningful connections and cultivates a deep sense of care and compassion

Design, prepare, and deliver learning activities that promote inquiry and facilitate authentic engagement

Identify and select instructional resources and methods to meet students' varying needs and are in line with the programs and ethos of the school

Use relevant technology to enhance teaching and learning

Design and implement a range of authentic formative and summative assessments to inform instructional decisions

Maintain accurate and complete records of students' learning data to provide timely feedback, design appropriate learning engagements, and facilitate reporting

Enthusiastically contribute to co-curricular programming (as a club supervisor, coach, etc.) and outdoor education experiences

Adhere to and advocate for our Child Safeguarding Policy and best practices in child protection

Collaborate daily with relevant colleagues to enable effective co-planning, co-teaching, and co-assessment

Contribute actively and thoughtfully in faculty meetings, collaborating with colleagues to enhance student learning and school initiatives

Engage enthusiastically in school events and parent meetings, fostering strong connections within the school community and supporting student success

Lead by example with respectful, clear, and timely communication, fostering trust and meaningful connections with students, colleagues, and parents

Embrace opportunities for growth by actively engaging in professional development and continually enhancing your skills to inspire and elevate the learning community

Endorse the school’s Guiding Statements

Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Commitment
