Job Description:

Infusion Nurse (RN)

  • Position Title: Infusion Nurse (RN)
  • Department: Clinical Operations
  • Reports To: Clinical Manager/Director of Nursing
  • FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Position Summary

The Infusion Nurse (RN) is responsible for providing safe, high-quality nursing care to oncology and hematology patients receiving infusion therapies in an outpatient setting. The Infusion Nurse administers chemotherapy, immunotherapy, blood products, hydration, injections, and supportive medications while monitoring patients for adverse reactions and ensuring compliance with established clinical protocols, regulatory standards, and Carolina Oncology Specialists policies. This position plays a critical role in delivering compassionate, patient-centered care and fostering a positive patient experience.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Administer intravenous chemotherapy, immunotherapy, biotherapy, hydration, blood products, and supportive medications in accordance with physician orders and established protocols.
  • Perform comprehensive patient assessments prior to, during, and following treatment.
  • Verify treatment plans, medication dosages, laboratory values, and patient eligibility prior to administering therapy.
  • Access, monitor, and maintain venous access devices, including peripheral IVs, PICC lines, and implanted ports.
  • Monitor patients for infusion-related reactions and implement appropriate interventions when necessary.
  • Provide patient and family education regarding treatment plans, medication side effects, symptom management, and follow-up care.
  • Document all patient assessments, interventions, treatments, and education accurately and timely within the electronic medical record.
  • Collaborate effectively with physicians, advanced practice providers, pharmacists, and other healthcare team members to coordinate patient care.
  • Review laboratory results and communicate abnormal findings to providers as appropriate.
  • Participate in care planning and ensure continuity of care throughout treatment.
  • Maintain compliance with OSHA, HIPAA, ONS, and other applicable regulatory requirements.
  • Ensure proper handling, preparation, administration, and disposal of hazardous medications.
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives and patient safety activities.
  • Respond appropriately to medical emergencies and initiate emergency procedures as needed.
  • Maintain inventory and ensure proper storage of medications and clinical supplies.
  • Attend required meetings, educational programs, and mandatory training sessions.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education

Associate Degree in Nursing required.

Licensure and Certifications

  • Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in North Carolina.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) preferred.
  • Oncology Certified Nurse (OCN®) certification preferred or obtained within a designated timeframe after hire.
  • Chemotherapy and Biotherapy Provider Course certification preferred.

Experience

  • Minimum of two years of nursing experience required.
  • Previous infusion, oncology, hematology, or outpatient clinical experience preferred.
  • Experience administering chemotherapy and biotherapy preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of oncology and hematology treatment principles.
  • Strong assessment and critical thinking skills.
  • Proficiency in administering intravenous therapies and managing vascular access devices.
  • Ability to recognize and respond to medical emergencies and adverse drug reactions.
  • Strong communication and patient education skills.
  • Ability to maintain patient confidentiality and comply with HIPAA regulations.
  • Proficiency with electronic medical records and clinical documentation systems.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced clinical environment.
  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary healthcare team.
  • Commitment to providing compassionate, patient-centered care.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods of time.
  • Frequent bending, stooping, reaching, and lifting up to 25 pounds.
  • Manual dexterity sufficient to perform clinical procedures and operate medical equipment.
  • Ability to wear personal protective equipment as required.
  • Ability to safely assist patients with mobility and transfers as necessary.

Working Conditions

  • Outpatient oncology and hematology clinic environment.
  • Frequent exposure to chemotherapy and other hazardous medications.
  • Exposure to bloodborne pathogens and infectious diseases.
  • Requires compliance with all safety, infection prevention, and hazardous drug handling procedures.
  • May require occasional travel between Carolina Oncology Specialists locations.
