Description

Job Summary: Responsible for in-patient, outpatient and community health, disease process, and procedural education. Other responsibilities include: BLS/CPR Instruction to staff, patients and community, health fair screening with health information distribution, participation in and promotion of compliance of core measures, and Diabetes Educator for Diabetes Center of Excellence.

Demonstrates Competency in the Following Areas:

  • Demonstrates behaviors consistent with organizational and departmental mission and vision.
  • Demonstrates ability to assess/reassess physical, psychosocial and cultural needs of the patient related to the disease process.
  • Demonstrates ability to assess/reassess physical, psychosocial and cultural needs of the patient related to the disease process.
  • Develops plan of education with patient, family and interdisciplinary health care team.
  • Assesses/reassesses patient/family readiness to learn.
  • Develops strategies to eliminate socioeconomic and cultural barriers to learning.
  • Coordinates educational strategies in conjunction with nursing care interventions.
  • Directs and assists with the development, planning and implementation of patient/family teaching protocols.
  • Demonstrates proficient technical skills, treatment modalities and operational knowledge of equipment.
  • Evaluates the patient’s response to educational instruction and maintains documentation of such.
  • Documents pertinent data including assessment, educational interventions and evaluation in patient’s medical record.
  • Demonstrates the ability to have general knowledge of growth and development in all age-specific groups from neonate to the elder geriatric to meet each age group’s assessed educational needs.
  • Maintains open communication with the interdisciplinary team to facilitate quality patient care.
  • Collaborates with physicians for approval of teaching materials utilized in instruction of patients/families.
  • Maintains confidentiality of all patient/family medical information as appropriate.
  • Demonstrates behavior that promotes positive customer relations within the organization and community.
  • Serves as a liaison between the hospital and the community in providing health related education.
  • Conserves resources for benefit of the patient/family and the hospital whenever possible.
  • Communicates monthly activities to department head by 10th of every month.
  • Assists in the development and revision of the department.

Requirements

Professional Requirements:

  • Dresses in a professional and appropriate manner.
  • Completes annual health and educational requirements in a timely manner.
  • Maintains regulatory requirements: hospital and nursing policies, procedures and standards.
  • Demonstrates ability to coordinate, organize and effectively prioritize duties.
  • Positively leads, promotes, and supports change.
  • Shows initiative.
  • Works in a spirit of genuine harmony with fellow workers.
  • Communicates to department head regularly and effectively.
  • Demonstrates good attendance and punctuality.

Educational/Experience/Regulatory Requirements:

  • Current Registered Nurse License in the state of Oklahoma; BSN preferred.
  • Current American Heart Association BLS CPR Instructor or attained within 90 days of hire.
  • Previous work history that demonstrates steady attendance and punctuality is required.
  • Prefer Adult Educational Experience and experience in multiple nursing areas.
  • Ability to read and communicate effectively in English.
  • Additional languages preferred.
  • Ability to work well with others.
  • Professional nursing image.
  • Previous experience with Microsoft office programs in addition to basic computer knowledge.
