Your role and responsibilities

We offer an internship position in the field of physics-based modeling and simulation of plasma dynamics in electrical arcs. You contribute to ongoing research projects involving the development, implementation, and validation of physical models for plasma-related phenomena relevant to ABB devices. You will work at the interface between physical modeling, numerical simulation, and experimental validation.

During the internship, you will be integrated into the Theoretical and Computational Methods Team, and you will have the opportunity to work closely with experienced researchers in an international group of experienced scientists and engineers, where you will be able to thrive.

The work model for the role is: #LI-Onsite

You will be mainly accountable for:

  • Collaborate with researchers to assess, develop, and validate physics-based models for industrial applications.
  • Review scientific literature and evaluate modeling approaches for the description of complex physical phenomena.
  • Implement and validate selected models using commercial simulation software and in-house simulation tools.
  • Contribute to simulation capability extensions through model development, numerical implementation, software coding, and documentation of results.

Qualifications for the role:

Enrolled student in Physics, Engineering Physics, Computational Physics, or a related physics subject (advanced B.Sc. or M.Sc. level).

Strong background in physics and numerical simulation of physical systems, interest in plasma physics.

Good scientific programming skills (e.g., C++, Python, or similar).

Experience with simulation software is beneficial; familiarity with commercial tools such as COMSOL, Ansys, or similar platforms, as well as open-source simulation frameworks, is an advantage.

Curiosity, analytical and problem-solving skills.

  • Good communication skills, both written and verbal; fluency in English.
  • Availability for six months (flexible start date early 2027).

What's in it for you

We empower you to take initiative, challenge ideas, and lead with confidence. You’ll grow through meaningful work, continuous learning, and support that’s tailored to your goals. Every idea you share and every action you take contributes to something bigger.

More about us
