Job Description Summary

Processes biological specimens for diagnostic analysis by verifying specimen integrity, resolving routine order or labeling discrepancies, and completing preparation activities such as centrifugation, aliquoting, storage, and routing. Applies working knowledge of laboratory workflows to prioritize time-sensitive specimens, communicate processing issues, and maintain accurate chain-of-custody and system records. PRN, Technician, Laboratory Processing carries out defined clinical support processes under moderate supervision, applying working knowledge to tasks that occasionally require interpretation or deviation from standard procedures. Decisions are procedure-driven and impact day-to-day patient interactions and team workflow. This job handles routine and moderately non-routine situations, communicating clearly with patients, members, and clinical staff. ‎

  • Key Responsibilities
  • Review specimens, test orders, and supporting documentation to confirm acceptability under established laboratory criteria.
  • Process specimens using approved centrifugation, aliquoting, separation, preservation, storage, and packaging procedures.
  • Prioritize urgent, timed, and temperature-sensitive specimens to support established turnaround requirements.
  • Investigate routine specimen discrepancies and coordinate corrections with collection sites, phlebotomy staff, or testing departments.
  • Enter and update specimen status, processing details, comments, and disposition information in the laboratory information system.
  • Prepare specimens for internal testing, reference laboratory shipment, storage, or approved disposal.
  • Monitor supplies and routine processing equipment, complete required checks, and report malfunctions or shortages.
  • Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent required; 2 to 4 years of laboratory processing, specimen handling, or related clinical support experience.
  • Working knowledge of specimen acceptance, preparation, storage, transport, and rejection requirements.
  • Experience following laboratory safety, infection prevention, confidentiality, and quality-control procedures.
  • Proficiency with laboratory information systems, barcode systems, and standard office technology.
  • Ability to interpret established procedures and resolve routine processing discrepancies accurately.
  • Strong organization, communication, and time-management skills in a volume-driven laboratory environment.
