Summary

Organizational Location: This position is with the Department of Homeland Security, within U.S. Customs and Border Protection, U.S. Border Patrol, Spokane Sector, Targeting & Intelligence Division in Spokane, WA. Additional selections may be made beyond the total number of vacancies specified using this vacancy announcement. Duties

In this position, you will be providing intelligence analysis, real-time communications, geospatial, surveillance, and database support for Customs and Border Protection (CBP) U.S. Border Patrol (USBP) law enforcement operations. Your work directly supports the agency mission by improving enforcement of immigration laws, helping detect and apprehend individuals suspected of violating immigration law or attempting unlawful entry, and contributing to officer and public safety. This position starts at a salary of $62,044.00 (GS-9, Step 1) to $80,662.00 (GS-9, Step 10). GS Salary: Visit this link to view the locality pay tables by geographic area. As a Law Enforcement Information Systems Specialist (LEISS), you will be responsible for providing intelligence, surveillance, geospatial, and database analysis in support of law enforcement operations. Typical duties will include: Creating intelligence reports based on extrapolated data, research, and analysis to support real-time Border Patrol operations. Analyzing tactical surveillance video, imagery, sensor alerts, and other resources to detect and identify threats and incursions. Providing agents with rapid access to historical activity data through geospatial information systems to improve situational awareness and operational effectiveness. Utilizing law enforcement information systems and national databases to conduct data mining, identity research, status determinations, and criminal history checks. Relaying actionable information to agents and partner law enforcement agencies in real time to support mission planning, execution, and officer safety.

Qualifications

Experience: You qualify for the GS-9 grade level if you possess 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level, performing duties such as: Using law enforcement information systems to collect, analyze, and report data for intelligence or enforcement operations; Applying analytical and evaluative methods to identify significant information sources, detect illegal activity, document issues or probable cause, and prepare reports; Researching, interpreting, and evaluating data from multiple databases to make recommendations or provide technical information; Applying knowledge of immigration law to identify persons of interest or determine whether individuals are in compliance with federal immigration law; Using national, international, or state computerized information systems to provide real-time tactical or operational information in support of enforcement activities. Education Substitution GS-9: A Master's degree, two full years of graduate education, a J.D. or an LL.B. degree from an accredited college or university may substitute for experience required at this level. Check with your school to determine how many credit hours comprise two years of graduate education. If that information is not available, use 36 semester or 54 quarter hours. Combining Education and Experience: Combinations of successfully completed post-high school education and experience may be used to meet total qualification requirements for the grade levels and may be computed by first determining your total qualifying experience as a percentage of the experience required for the grade level; then determining your education as a percentage of the education required for the grade level; and then adding the two percentages. The total percentages must equal at least 100 percent to qualify for that grade level. Only graduate education in excess of the amount required for the next lower grade level may be used to qualify applicants for positions at grades GS-9. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. You must meet all qualification requirements, including education if applicable to this position, subject to verification at any stage of the application process by 10/16/2026. In order to be considered for this position, you must complete all required steps in the process. In addition to the application and application questionnaire, this position requires an online assessment. The online assessment measures critical general competencies required to perform the job. The USA Hire Assessments includes a cut score based on the minimum level of required proficiency in these critical general competencies. You must meet or exceed the cut score to be considered. You will not be considered for the position if you score below the cut score or fail to complete the assessment.
