The Company

We’re Octopus Legacy: one of the fastest growing tech companies in the country, part of the UK’s most exciting and best-trusted group (you may have heard of some of our sister companies…) and we have a mission.

We’re on a path to scale, aiming to become a household name while transforming an outdated industry and helping our customers prepare for, and find support after, death.

But we can’t do it alone, and that’s why we’re assembling a team of top performers to build with us.

Ready to be part of something big?

The Role

The successful candidate will operate Octopus Legacy's day-to-day compliance work, with oversight from, and reporting directly to our Head of Legal. They’ll own the process of information requests about how wills were prepared, personal data incidents, data subject requests, and the steady flow of questions from across the business.

This role is ideal for an experienced paralegal looking to take the next step into an in-house role.

Key Responsibilities

Log and acknowledge requests about how a will was prepared, confirming the requester’s standing and executor authority (or a court order);

review the relevant file, coordinate consultant statements, and draft substantive responses to such requests;

escalate complex, high-value or unusual matters, and keep the matter log current;

triage data incidents with the teams involved; support risk assessments and drafting notifications for sign-off to the ICO or affected data subjects where required;

handle access, erasure and other rights requests within statutory deadlines (one month, extendable in limited cases);

Record every incident and the reasoning behind each decision in the breach register, whether reported or not.

Conduct legal research on issues relevant to the business.

Handle access, erasure and other rights requests within statutory deadlines

Deliver short training and answer day-to-day queries from teams.

Produce a regular compliance report on volumes, deadlines, trends and open risks

Assist the legal and compliance function in ensuring the company complies with applicable laws and regulations.

Who Are You?

3+ years in a legal, compliance or data protection role; handling sensitive personal information; managing a caseload to deadline;

experienced in wills, probate or contentious probate work, including Larke v Nugus requests (desirable but not essential);

You have working knowledge of UK GDPR and understanding of how will files are prepared and why they get challenged;

Interest in compliance (legal, regulatory, or operational);

Highly organised, with excellent attention to detail and meticulous record-keeping skills

Comfortable working in a lean team and wearing multiple hats

Clear communicator who can break down legal concepts for non-lawyers

Our Mission

When people think about planning for death they think about wills, life insurance and funerals. We take these cold processes and turn them into something more human. Share more than money: leave voice notes, music, recipes. Shape a legacy that connects you while you're here. And after you're gone.

Founded by Sam after his mum died suddenly, we’re a group of people who work in death because we’ve been affected by it. We know the difference a good plan makes, and what it’s like when there isn’t one.

Death can come between us, leave mess, legal fees, frustration. But it can also make us stronger. We see a world where people talk openly about death, and work out the real meaning of legacy, one that connects to them. We’re here to make that world happen .
