Description
LAC Federal is seeking an experienced Librarian to provide professional library, research, reference, collection management, and technical services in support of a federal government customer in the Northern Virginia area. The Librarian will work on-site in a highly secure professional environment, supporting government personnel through effective access to authoritative print and electronic information resources. The successful candidate will combine strong research and reference capabilities with experience supporting library collections, electronic resources, cataloging and metadata, circulation, and other core library operations. This position is well suited for a service-oriented information professional who is comfortable working independently and collaboratively in a highly structured federal environment. Preference will be given to candidates with active Secret or Top-Secret clearance.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provide professional reference and research services, responding to routine and complex information requests from government personnel.
- Support circulation, patron services, interlibrary loan, document delivery, serials, and other day-to-day library operations.
- Conduct literature, database, bibliographic, and other information searches using authoritative commercial, government, academic, and open-source resources.
- Assist users in identifying, locating, evaluating, and effectively using print, electronic, and digital information resources.
- Support collection development and management, including selection, acquisition, evaluation, organization, maintenance, inventory, weeding, and disposition of library materials.
- Perform or support cataloging, classification, metadata creation, and bibliographic record maintenance using established professional standards and local procedures.
- Administer or support electronic resources, research databases, digital collections, and integrated library or library services platforms.
- Develop research guides for specific topics, regions, and requested issues; develop and maintain bibliographies, resource lists, instructional materials, standard operating procedures, and other knowledge products.
- Provide individual and group instruction on library resources, databases, research techniques, and information-literacy practices.
- Maintain accurate usage, workload, collection, and service statistics and contribute to recurring reports and performance metrics.
- Participate in collection inventories, quality-control reviews, special research projects, and initiatives designed to improve library services and resource discoverability.
- Handle information, records, systems, and customer requests in accordance with applicable federal security requirements, customer policies, records-management requirements, and established operating procedures.
- Assist users with access issues for electronic resources including internal and vendor-provided databases
Requirements
- Master of Library and Information Science (MLIS), Master of Library Science (MLS), or equivalent master's degree in library/information science from an ALA-accredited program.
- Strong preference will be given to candidates with active TS/SCI or SECRET clearance
- Professional experience providing library, research, reference, information, or technical services in a professional, academic, government, corporate, or specialized library environment.
- Demonstrated ability to conduct complex research using online databases, catalogs, electronic resources, and authoritative web-based information sources.
- Working knowledge of professional library principles and practices, including reference services, collection management, cataloging/metadata, circulation, and electronic-resource support.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills with demonstrated ability to interact professionally with customers, colleagues, and stakeholders.
- Ability to organize multiple assignments, establish priorities, meet deadlines, and work with limited supervision.
- Demonstrated attention to detail and commitment to accuracy, quality control, customer service, and appropriate handling of sensitive information.
- Ability to work full-time on-site in the Dulles/Northern Virginia area and satisfy all facility access and security requirements.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- 3–7+ years of professional librarian or information-specialist experience.
- Previous experience supporting a federal government, defense, intelligence, law enforcement, scientific, technical, academic, or other specialized research library.
- Experience working in a classified, controlled-access, or otherwise security-sensitive environment.
- Experience conducting complex research for analysts, researchers, scientists, technical personnel, executives, or other specialized professional users.
- Familiarity with integrated library systems or library services platforms such as Alma, WorldShare Management Services, SirsiDynix Symphony, Koha, FOLIO, or comparable systems.
- Experience with professional cataloging and metadata standards, including MARC 21, RDA, LCSH, LCNAF, Library of Congress Classification, Dublin Core, or related standards.
- Experience with commercial research databases, electronic journals, discovery systems, subscription resources, or other specialized information platforms.
- Experience with interlibrary loan, document delivery, acquisitions, serials, electronic-resource management, or collection development.
- Experience developing research guides, bibliographies, training materials, SOPs, or other library and knowledge-management products.
- Demonstrated ability to identify opportunities to improve research workflows, resource discoverability, customer service, and library operations.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to remain in a stationary position for extended periods while performing computer-based and library-related duties.
- Ability to move throughout the library and office environment and occasionally bend, stoop, or reach to retrieve, shelve, or inventory materials.
- Ability to occasionally lift, carry, push, or move books, files, supplies, and other library materials weighing up to 25 pounds.
