Job Types: Full-time, Temporary Typical

Under the direction of the Facilities & Operation Director, monitors youth in and around pool to ensure safe behavior and adherence to rules and provides care to those in distress. Primary functions of the job are to provide a safe environment in and around the pool and respond to minor and major emergencies both in water and on the pool deck. Independent judgment, personal discretion, and resourcefulness are needed to interpret and apply guidelines.

This position would be up to 8 hours per day between hours of 9:30 am and 5:30 pm, M-F, from May 23 -Jul 26.

Principal Responsibilities

  • Observes and supervises swimmers; maintains order and discipline; and enforces water safety rules and regulations
  • Conducts swimming tests on each swimmer to determine swimming ability
  • Follows correct emergency procedures in case of accident or drowning, including rescuing, resuscitation, and first aid administration.
  • Prepares and maintains applicable records. Checks pool water and records readings three times daily to ensure the water is within safe limits
  • Monitors and maintains appropriate levels of water and materials
  • Helps to clean and maintain pool, pool deck, locker rooms and adjoining areas in accordance with specified standards for periodic inspections, checks pool and surrounding area for potential hazards
  • Assists with pool maintenance as required
  • Promptly reports to the Facilities Manager any repairs needed for pool, pool deck, pump room, outdoor showers and/or equipment.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Competencies

  • Basic knowledge of simple mathematical functions to apply chemicals correctly.
  • Specialized knowledge of lifesaving and first aid methods and techniques.
  • Specialized knowledge of public swimming area safety – including protocols for lightning, severe weather, and contagious substances.
  • Ability to work courteously and effectively with other employees, members, and parents.
  • Must be in good physical health necessary to perform the job tasks, such as rescuing a person in distress.
  • Ability to act quickly and calmly in emergencies.
  • Ability to consistently apply and demonstrate sound ethics and judgment, solve problems, make effective decisions, and act with integrity.
  • Ability to accurately organize and maintain records and documents.

Conditions of Employment

Employment by Girls Inc. for all positions is contingent upon successfully passing a criminal background check, including a sex offender check, as well as a pre-employment drug screening and a review of Department of Motor Vehicles records as required and allowable by law. Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or G.E.D. preferred
  • Previous lifeguard experience preferred

Required Certifications and Licenses

  • Lifeguard Certification
  • CPR/AED Certification
  • Ability to pass a criminal background and drug test
