Job Description:

  • POSITION PURPOSE SUMMARY:
  • This role performs a range of preventative, routine, and emergency tasks to ensure the safety, functionality, and cleanliness of the facility and its grounds to ensure that all facilities and equipment meet Health and Safety Standards under the direction of the supervisor. The role contributes to the broader mission and values of The Salvation Army, upholding standards of service that reflect its spiritual and social commitment to the community.
  • ACCOUNTABILITIES:
  • Incumbents may perform all, some, or similar range of duties as below.
  • Conduct routine inspections and complete repairs on building systems, equipment, and furnishings, including minor carpentry, plumbing, electrical, painting, and drywall work.
  • Troubleshoot issues with HVAC, lighting, doors, fixtures, fire safety equipment, and mechanical systems; escalate or coordinate with vendors when necessary.
  • Complete maintenance work orders, maintain service logs, and assist with minor renovation and upgrade projects.
  • Perform scheduled maintenance checks, including emergency lighting, fire exits, smoke detectors, boilers, sprinklers, and exhaust fans.
  • Monitor adherence to health and safety standards (e.g., OH&S, WHMIS), report hazards promptly, and participate in building inspections and audits as directed.
  • Support maintenance of logs and records related to inspections, servicing, and repairs.
  • Check and maintain the external appearance and safety of the property, including garbage removal, landscaping, snow removal, and salting of entrances and walkways.
  • Operate yard equipment (e.g., lawn mower, snow blower) and ensure safe use and storage of seasonal tools.
  • Assist with the general cleanliness of facility areas when needed, including floor care, waste collection, and room preparation.
  • Support internal teams during events, room setups, or emergency situations and coordinate furniture moves and minor rearrangements.
  • Coordinate with external service providers for specialized maintenance (e.g., elevators, HVAC, fire systems) as directed by supervisor, escort contractors as needed and help ensure work is completed to standards.
  • Monitor stock, order and track inventory of supplies and materials, and reorder as directed.
  • As a team member, participate in policy and procedure reviews related to facility safety and maintenance when required.
  • Assist with work on documentation for licensing and accreditation inspections.
  • Perform routine inspections, cleaning, and servicing of program vehicles and facility equipment.
  • Support maintenance of equipment logs, vehicle usage records, and arrange for repairs or servicing in coordination with supervisors.
  • Act as a team resource by sharing expertise, offering improvement suggestions, and participating in Health and Safety Committees.
  • Maintain professionalism in all interactions, demonstrating sensitivity when working around clients and visitors.
  • Work collaboratively with all departments to maintain a safe, clean, and welcoming environment for clients, staff, and visitors.
  • Other related duties as assigned.
  • CRITICAL RELATIONSHIP MANAGEMENT:
  • Internal: Ministry Unit leadership, staff, and volunteers.
  • External: Contractors, vendors, guests/clients of ministry unit.
  • FINANCIAL AND MATERIALS MANAGEMENT:
  • Expected to exercise good judgment in the use of organizational and personal resources.
  • May be responsible for maintaining and tracking inventories of maintenance supplies.
  • May hold material responsibility for the proper care and maintenance of tools and equipment.
  • WORKING CONDITIONS:
  • Work is primarily performed indoors within the ministry unit. Some outdoor work might be required.
  • The performance of the job requires frequent use of equipment and tools.
  • Physical effort needed in bending/twisting, climbing, carrying, ladder work, spot painting.
  • Moderate to high level of attention and concentration when using electrical or mechanical equipment and tools.
  • Care is required in the use of chemicals.
  • Physical stamina and the ability to lift, carry or pull/push objects up to 50 lbs are usually required.
  • The work environment is generally positive; however, the incumbent may occasionally interact with individuals displaying challenging behaviours.

  • EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Education, Qualifications and Certifications:
  • Completion of Grade 12 plus additional training/courses in facilities management or equivalent.
  • Experience and Knowledge Requirements:
  • Up to one year of related experience is a minimum requirement for this role including general familiarity with maintenance procedures and equipment and/or construction experience.
  • Current First Aid/CPR, WHMIS Certificate and working knowledge of universal precautions.
  • Working knowledge of basic carpentry, dry walling, painting, electrical, plumbing, mechanical systems, heating systems, construction and renovation.
  • Knowledge of building code standards.
  • An alternative level or combination of education and experience may be acceptable.
  • Skills and Capabilities:
  • Willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.
  • Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army’s health and safety policies and procedures.
  • Ability to climb on and work off ladders at various heights (painting, dusting, changing light bulbs, cleaning eavestrough, pruning trees) comfortably as well as perform various maintenance and cleaning tasks from an elevated platform (30+ feet above ground)
  • Ability to identify and address cleaning and maintenance issues independently and determine when to refer matters to a supervisor.
  • Good oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to follow detailed instructions accurately.
  • Disciplined and adaptable, with a willingness to learn.
  • Demonstrated attention to detail with good problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrated patience, understanding, and professionalism in all interactions.
  • High level of integrity, confidentiality, and professional ethics, with a balanced sense of fairness and flexibility.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Physical stamina and the ability to lift, carry or pull/push objects up to 50 lbs.
