Job Summary
Assist with the management and execution of the department’s custodial operations, with direct responsibility for supervising evening custodial staff and supplemental oversight of evening event staff who report to a day-shift manager. Ensure that assigned staff receive appropriate direction, support, and
oversight to maintain service standards and operational continuity throughout the evening shift. This includes scheduling, evaluating, and training staff and student workers. Manage facilities operations during evening shift hours. Make recommendations for and work closely with vendors to obtain cost
estimates for furnishings, supplies and equipment. Foster a climate of growth and leadership among staff while maintaining cooperative relationships with colleagues and other campus departments. Coordinate and conduct training sessions to uphold consistent standards across divisions.
Take appropriate actions to support a diverse workforce and participate in the College's efforts to create a respectful, inclusive, and welcoming work environment.
Essential Functions
Custodial Operations (35%):
- Coordinate with the Associate Director of Facilities Operations to manage evening custodial operations and event support, ensuring appropriate staffing, communication, and service delivery across assigned facilities.
- Manage day-to-day Facilities operations during the evening shift, serving as the primary point of contact for Campus Safety and other campus partners for facility-related needs, emergencies, and operational concerns.
- Respond to emergency calls and facility-related incidents during the evening shift.
- Assess situations, determine appropriate corrective actions, and coordinate the deployment of Facilities on-call personnel, custodial staff, and other resources as needed.
- Coordinate custodial support for campus events and special activities, ensuring staffing and service requirements are communicated clearly and completed in accordance with established expectations.
- Research, evaluate, and recommend appropriate furnishings, custodial supplies, equipment, and operational resources to support effective and efficient service delivery throughout assigned areas.
- Collaborate with the supervisor of the Grounds Department to ensure campus readiness during inclement weather and other weather-related conditions, including coordinating and scheduling custodial staff support as needed.
- Monitor evening custodial operations to ensure established service standards, departmental procedures, safety requirements, and customer service expectations are consistently maintained.
- Communicate operational issues, staffing needs, service concerns, and significant incidents to the Associate Director of Facilities Operations and other appropriate department leadership in a timely manner.
Custodial Supervision (35%):
- Supervise, train, coach, and motivate custodial staff to ensure work is performed effectively, efficiently, safely, and in accordance with departmental standards, policies, and procedures.
- Conduct regular meetings with Coordinating Custodians and custodial staff to communicate operational plans, review policies and procedures, address service needs, and promote teamwork, accountability, and a clear understanding of departmental expectations and work rules.
- Conduct regular inspections of assigned academic and residential facilities to assess cleanliness, service levels, safety, and overall condition.
- Follow up on identified concerns and ensure appropriate corrective action is taken.
- Document building inspections, service concerns, and follow-up activities.
- Work collaboratively with employees to identify areas for improvement, establish performance expectations and goals, and monitor progress.
- Evaluate and document custodial performance and work with Manager on progressive discipline if warranted.
- Interview job applicants and recommend new hires.
- Encourage problem solving and create appropriate independent customer service skills within work group.
Administration (20%):
- Review and approve custodial payroll.
- Oversee work order process, weekly staff reports, distribute and track overtime for custodial coverage, building checks, event support and additional projects when assigned.
- Investigate, document, and prepare billing for all damages in academic buildings.
- Maintain comprehensive knowledge of current union contract(s) and comply with all contract language.
- Participate in and contribute to department and management meetings.
Training (10%):
- Contribute to the design and implementation of departmental training programs.
- Schedule and conduct training sessions to ensure a high level of safety and cleanliness standards are upheld across divisions.
- Attend educational opportunities aimed at enhancing professional skills.
- Perform other duties as assigned by management.
MINIMUM REQUIRED Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree
- 5 years of relevant experience with at least 1 year of leadership and/or a combination of education and experience.
- Knowledge and experience in residential and institutional operations.
Skills:
- Excellent verbal and written communication ability and customer service
- skills.
- Demonstrated ability to work with students, student organizations,
- faculty, and staff.
- Ability to organize and prioritize work, takes initiative, resolve problems, and manage teams.
- Must work well independently and manage multiple tasks simultaneously. Must be proficient in PC systems and software.
- Ability to work a flexible schedule, which includes days, evenings
- and weekends.
Preferred Certification(s):
Must maintain current OSA Blood-borne Pathogen training certification.
Compensation
In addition to a competitive benefits package, annualized pay for this role is typically between $63,029.35–$76,535.64 covering the middle half of market compensation. Actual compensation will vary based on individual qualifications and work schedule if less than full-time.
