The opportunity

Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan is Canada's largest single-profession pension plan with C$303.2bn in net assets as of June 30, 2026. We invest and pay pensions on behalf of 346,000 working and retired teachers.

OTPP manages ~C$53B in private equity assets globally, including a direct investing portfolio of nearly C$40B with ambition to deploy approximately C$4–5B annually going forward. In practical terms, the scale and pace of investing are comparable to a leading global private equity franchise managing the equivalent of a ~C$20–25B fund but with the advantages of permanent capital, long-duration investment horizons, and no fundraising cycle. Importantly, this is not a passive capital platform. The mandate is highly sector-specialized and focused on building differentiated investment franchises.

OTPP's India office, established in 2022, has grown rapidly into one of our highest-conviction markets globally. With approximately C$6 billion deployed across private equity, infrastructure, growth equity, and credit, India is a core pillar of our global growth strategy.

This is a rare opportunity for an experienced investment leader to run OTPP's India private equity franchise at a genuinely formative moment. The person in this role will have the backing of a permanent capital base, a globally connected platform, and the opportunity to shape the strategy, team and market presence of an enduring India franchise.

Who you'll work with

The MD reports directly to the Senior Managing Director & Head of India and leads the India Equities team. The role works closely with Equities APAC leadership, global sector teams, Value Creation and other international offices, while maintaining clear accountability for the India franchise.

What you'll do

Build and lead the India Equities franchise:

  • Own the India Equities strategy, including priority sectors, portfolio construction, deployment discipline and risk-return objectives and evolve it in step with OTPP’s global objectives
  • Develop differentiated sector theses, target maps and origination strategies that create a clear 'right to win' for Ontario Teachers’
  • Build origination networks across promoters, founders, GPs, investment banks, and advisors that give OTPP a structural, relationship-driven sourcing advantage
  • Represent OTPP in the Indian market with credibility and conviction; deepen the platform's reputation as a preferred long-term partner for high-quality businesses

Originate and lead high-conviction investments:

  • Lead the full investment lifecycle from origination through IC approval and closing
  • Form independent investment conviction, balance upside with downside protection, and apply disciplined judgment on valuation, risk and when to walk away
  • Create winning transaction angles by combining local market insight with Ontario Teachers’ global sector expertise and broader capabilities

Drive portfolio performance and value creation:

  • Serve on portfolio company boards or in board observer roles and act as a trusted, constructive partner to management teams
  • Drive value creation across strategy, talent, operations, M&A, capital structure, refinancing and other strategic initiatives, with clear accountability for investment outcomes
  • Monitor performance actively, identify issues early and intervene decisively when an investment is off plan, while maintaining a clear path to value realization and exit

Build a high-performing investment team:

  • Lead, coach and develop the India Equities team through apprenticeship, clear delegation and regular feedback, while building succession and sector depth
  • Create a culture of rigorous debate, intellectual honesty, collaboration and accountability, with high standards for both investment judgment and execution

Operate as an enterprise leader:

  • Work closely with Equities APAC, global sector leaders, Value Creation and international offices to bring the best of Ontario Teachers’ to India and to contribute India perspectives to the broader global platform
  • Communicate clearly and proactively with senior stakeholders and investment committees, bringing others along without compromising investment conviction

What you'll need

  • 18+ years of relevant investment experience, with substantial recent experience leading private equity investments in India at a senior level
  • A strong realized track record across market cycles, including sourcing, underwriting, negotiating, executing, managing and exiting investments
  • Demonstrated ability to originate differentiated opportunities and lead complex transactions from inception through investment committee and closing
  • Significant board and portfolio-company experience, including driving value creation and navigating underperformance or other challenging situations
  • Track record of building, leading and developing high-performing investment teams and working effectively with senior global stakeholders
  • Deep understanding of the Indian private equity market, including sector dynamics, governance, financing, transaction structures, regulatory considerations and exit pathways
  • Strong understanding of portfolio construction and the trade-offs between conviction, concentration, liquidity, risk and return
  • Practical knowledge of value creation across strategy, management and talent, operations, M&A, capital structure and governance
  • Ability to assess businesses both quantitatively and qualitatively, including competitive position, management quality, durability of earnings and downside scenarios
  • Strong academic background
  • Exceptional investment judgment and a demonstrated track record of generating attractive risk-adjusted returns in private equity
  • Deep credibility in the Indian private equity market, with strong relationships across founders and promoters, senior executives, advisers, financial institutions and other investors
  • Strong commercial, analytical and negotiation skills, with the ability to synthesize complex information into clear investment decisions and communicate those decisions persuasively
  • Proven people leadership and a genuine commitment to developing senior investment talent through coaching and apprenticeship
  • Ability to operate effectively in a global, highly collaborative institutional environment while retaining independence of thought and investment conviction
