Overview of ACLS

Formed a century ago, the American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS) is a nonprofit federation of 85 scholarly organizations. As the leading representative of American scholarship in the humanities and social sciences, our core principle is that knowledge is a public good. As such, ACLS strives to promote the circulation of humanistic knowledge throughout society. In addition to stewarding and representing its member organizations, ACLS employs its endowment and $34 million annual operating budget to support scholarship in the humanities and social sciences and to advocate for its central role in the twenty-first century.

Job Summary

ACLS is seeking versatile, solutions-oriented Marketing and Operations Manager to serve as the production engine behind our communications practice. Reporting to the Chief Communications Officer (CCO) and working closely with the Media Relations and Content Manager and staff across the organization, this position will help to further position ACLS as a thought leader and trusted resource on the value of humanities education and research.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Mailchimp

Oversee design, distribution, and back-end functioning of monthly community newsletter and all ACLS announcements, including competition calls for applications, award announcements, advocacy statements, and grant announcements;

Manage distribution lists, segments, and strategies, assess data related to open rates and other engagement metrics, and work with CCO in developing approaches to enhance engagement; and

Update and develop new branding elements and templates for use in Mailchimp.

WordPress Development and Processes

Work closely with CCO and web development partner on identifying and scheduling web fixes and site enhancements, as well as training and resource material for staff users as needed;

Work closely with CCO on tracking and assessing site content performance and architecture and creating and managing redirect links;

Collaborate with Communications Team and CRM Data Integration Specialist in managing function and appearance of awardee records and other CRM integration content;

Manage content ownership map for staff users and lead process for universal updates;

Provide technical assistance to staff users as needed; and

Represent Communications at weekly technology meeting with vendors.

Digital Advertising Strategy and Implementation

Collaborate with program and fundraising teams on create plans for paid social media and third party advertising plans based on timing and budget;

Use Canva to design basic ads and graphics and work closely with external graphic designer on more complex materials for each campaign; and

Assess and create and present on ad campaign performance, including recommendations for improvements going forward.

Social Media

Collaborate closely with Media Outreach and Content Manager in envisioning, developing, and implementing strategies to increase reach, growth, and engagement on ACLS Facebook, BlueSky, Instagram, YouTube, and LinkedIn; accounts and the development of a distinct and powerful ACLS voice in related conversations across ACLS social media channels;

Produce, schedule, and assess performance of daily content and make recommendations on how to grow audiences and engagement;

Collaborate closely with Media Outreach and Content Manager in developing social media tool kits with sample content for use/adaptation by ACLS members, Fellows, and partners;

Track and report on effectiveness of social media outreach strategies and refine as needed;and

Monitor social media news and trend developments related to ACLS mission and programs.

Digital Asset Development

Produce audience-facing marketing collateral, directing external designers to a high standard and on deadline;

Maintain and steward ACLS brand templates and standards;

Collaborate with Communications Team in working with external vendors in organizing video shoots of ACLS and developing content, including promotional packages, constituent interviews, and social media cuts; and

Capture photography at events as needed.

Other Assignments

Work closely with CCO on visual brand management and development and in developing signage, select publications, and staff resources as needed;

Draft select external communications as assigned;

Present on select projects to staff and leadership as needed;

Document processes and policies on social media, advertising, Mailchimp, WordPress, and other tools and resources for staff;

Provide general administrative support as needed; and

Other duties as assigned to support the Communications Team and ACLS overall.

Qualifications

3+ years experience in communications, content marketing, editorial, or journalism, ideally in a mission-driven or higher education context;

Fluent with third-party marketing tools including WordPress, Mailchimp, Sprout Social, Microsoft Office, Teams;

Strong experience as a cross-functional collaborator with demonstrated ability to work across units, subject-matter experts, marketing, and partners;

Highly organized (we love spreadsheets!) with strong attention to detail. Must be able to build, track, and adjust cross-departmental project timelines; meet deadlines; and build, clearly document, and refine processes and systems for communications team and organization staff;

Highly agile, with ability to produce content quickly and shift priorities as needed in a fast-paced environment;

Brand- and design-minded. Canva experience a must, Adobe Creative Cloud and HTML experience a strong plus. Must have a strong eye for design, experience in directing external designers, ability to create simple assets quickly, and ability to maintain templates and standards that keep a brand consistent;

Experience using DSLR cameras and capturing basic event photography;

Familiar with video production basics and working with photo and video vendors;

Familiarity with the higher education landscape is a plus; and

Hybrid work schedule; must live within commuting distance of New York City.

Compensation and Benefits

Base salary range: $90,000 - $110,000, commensurate with experience
