Material Manager

Mullins Mechanical is a leader in industrial and large commercial mechanical, plumbing, HVAC construction projects. Our projects are often in the industrial and manufacturing environments, such as manufacturing facilities, automotive plants, chemical plants, distribution centers, warehouses, and other large commercial facilities. We are a self-performing specialty contractor specializing in design-build applications, HVAC systems, plumbing, process piping systems, boiler and chiller systems, equipment installation and rigging, plant relocation and maintenance, and metal fabrication.

Responsibilities:

Lead and manage the material management function for large-scale construction projects, including oversight and daily direction of Material Coordinators and Material Expediters.

Oversee the complete material lifecycle from receiving through installation, ensuring materials are received, inspected, documented, stored, issued, tracked, and delivered to the field as required.

Manage shipping and receiving activities, including delivery coordination, unloading, verification of packing slips and purchase orders, discrepancy resolution, and documentation of damaged or missing materials.

Maintain accurate, real-time inventory records for materials and equipment and ensure material status is consistently updated in company systems, spreadsheets, and project tracking tools.

Develop and maintain organized inventory, laydown, warehouse, and storage processes that support efficient material flow and minimize loss, damage, theft, or unnecessary handling.

Implement inventory control procedures, conduct routine audits and cycle counts, reconcile discrepancies, and maintain accurate records for reporting and auditing purposes.

Develop and implement project-specific material management and logistics plans aligned with project schedules, procurement activities, fabrication needs, and field installation priorities.

Coordinate with Project Management, Field Operations, Procurement, Project Services, vendors, suppliers, and subcontractors to identify material requirements and ensure materials are available when needed.

Track material from order and shipment through receipt, staging, issuance, and installation; proactively identify shortages, delays, missing items, or other risks that could impact the project schedule.

Manage delivery schedules, site logistics, laydown areas, storage locations, and material distribution to ensure safe and efficient movement of materials across the project site.

Use spreadsheets and company systems to enter, organize, track, and report material quantities, locations, delivery status, inventory levels, and installation progress.

Provide regular updates to project leadership regarding inventory status, upcoming deliveries, material shortages, logistics constraints, and potential schedule impacts.

Communicate with suppliers and vendors to resolve shipping, receiving, quality, quantity, and documentation discrepancies.

Ensure materials are properly identified and stored and comply with project specifications, quality requirements, safety regulations, and applicable industry standards.

Establish clear processes, expectations, and accountability for the material team while maintaining a highly organized and efficient material operation.

Adhere to company policies, OSHA regulations, and site-specific safety protocols.

Additional responsibilities may be assigned as needed.

Qualifications:

5+ years of experience in material management, logistics, warehouse operations, shipping and receiving, inventory control, or a related role; construction material management experience strongly preferred.

Previous experience leading and managing a material, logistics, warehouse, or inventory team; experience supervising Material Coordinators and/or Material Expediters preferred.

Experience supporting large-scale construction projects and managing high volumes of materials, deliveries, inventory, and field distribution preferred.

Strong logistics, shipping and receiving, inventory management, and material tracking experience.

Advanced organizational skills with the ability to establish processes, maintain accurate records, manage multiple priorities, and keep a fast-paced material operation organized.

Strong computer literacy and ability to quickly learn and consistently use company systems and digital tracking tools.

Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and spreadsheets, including entering, organizing, maintaining, and tracking material and inventory data.

Experience with Procore or similar construction management software is a plus.

Experience in the mechanical, plumbing, process piping, HVAC, or other skilled construction trades is a plus.

Working knowledge of mechanical construction materials, including piping, plumbing, HVAC, equipment, fittings, valves, and related components, preferred.

Strong leadership, communication, coordination, and problem-solving skills.

Ability to read and reconcile purchase orders, packing slips, bills of lading, delivery documentation, and inventory records.

Experience with OSHA workplace safety standards.

Clean driving history/record.

Forklift and telehandler operation experience; certifications preferred.

Essential Job Functions:

Work around moving equipment — such as forklifts, cranes, aerial lifts, skid steers, and other heavy machinery.

Standing and walking for extended periods

Maintain situational awareness in dynamic, noisy, and high‑hazard environments.

Use required PPE including hard hats, safety glasses, gloves, hearing protection, fall protection, and respiratory protection when applicable.

Communicate effectively with team members, supervisors, and equipment operators using verbal instructions, radios, and hand signals.

Physical Demands:

Lifting and carrying materials and equipment up to 50 lbs frequently

Working on uneven terrain including dirt, gravel, mud, rebar mats, and unfinished surfaces.

Full use of hands, arms, legs, and balance to safely navigate job sites and perform tasks.

Visual and auditory acuity sufficient to identify hazards, read instructions, and communicate in high‑noise environments.

Environmental Conditions:

Year‑round outdoor environments including extreme heat, cold, rain, snow, and wind.

Industrial indoor environments such as data centers, manufacturing floors, mechanical rooms, and utility spaces.

High‑noise areas requiring hearing protection.

Dusty, dirty, or fume‑producing environments depending on project scope.

Tight or congested workspaces with multiple trades working simultaneously.

Varying lighting conditions including low‑light or task‑light‑only areas.

Cognitive & Safety‑Critical Requirements

Maintain alertness and awareness for long periods.

Recognize and avoid hazards including fall hazards, electrical hazards, pinch points, and equipment movement.

Follow written and verbal instructions accurately.

Make quick, safe decisions in changing conditions.

Work independently or as part of a team depending on task needs.
