Summary of Job Duties:

A Medical Laboratory Scientist I – Blood Bank is an entry-level laboratory professional who performs testing related to blood transfusion and blood products, helping ensure patients receive compatible and safe blood.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

• •Bachelor of Science Degree in Medical Laboratory Sciences, Medical Technology, Chemistry, Biology or related discipline.
• •Eligible for ASCP Certification or equivalent. Certification must be obtained within a year of eligibility.

Job Requirements:

• •Provide direct patient care by supplying the patient with appropriate blood components
• •Wash red blood cells and platelets
• •Perform platelet crossmatching and platelet antibody identification
• •Perform daily reagent QC and equipment preventive maintenance
• •Issue blood and blood components to the floors
• •Assist in training of new staff and students
• •Maintain competency and train on all revised and new policy/procedures in a timely manner
• •Report any deviation from standard operating procedures to the supervisor in a timely manner
• •Perform other duties as needed
