POSITIONS: As this position operates on a shift-work schedule, IRC is seeking to fill multiple Safety Attendant positions.

ABOUT INUVIALUIT REGIONAL CORPORATION (IRC)
Established in 1984 to manage the settlement outlined in the Inuvialuit Final Agreement (IFA), Inuvialuit Regional Corporation (IRC) represents the collective interests of Inuvialuit. IRC’s goal is to continually improve the economic, social and cultural wellbeing of the Inuvialuit through implementation of the IFA and by all other available means. Through strong partnerships and community‑driven programs, the organization supports economic growth, cultural preservation and opportunities for current and future generations.
Inuvialuit beneficiaries directly control IRC and its subsidiaries through a democratic process of elected directors from each of the six community corporations with chairs at the IRC Board, a process originally outlined in the IFA.
DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW
The Health & Wellness Programs Division delivers community wellness services that promote stability, recovery, and long-term well-being. The Transitional Housing Addictions Recovery Program (THARP) provides 24/7 safe and supportive residential environments for individuals in transition. Programs integrate Inuvialuit cultural values, trauma-informed care, and holistic approaches to support clients in achieving personal wellness goals.
JOB OVERVIEW
The Men's Wellness & Safety Attendant plays a vital role in ensuring a safe, respectful, and supportive environment for all residents and staff within IRC’s THARP facility.
Due to the gender‑specific, culturally grounded, and therapeutic nature of this Indigenous men’s recovery program, including participation in men’s teachings and ceremonies, the need for privacy in non‑co‑ed living spaces, and occasional solo supervision of male residents, this position is restricted to applicants who identify as male. This requirement is recognized as a bona fide occupational requirement (BFOR) under applicable human rights legislation to preserve the cultural, safety, and program integrity of gender‑specific services.
Working within a 24/7 rotational schedule, the Safety Attendant provides continuous supervision of facility safety, conducts regular wellness checks, supports residents with daily routines, and responds to incidents using de-escalation and trauma-informed approaches.
This position is part of the frontline care team and reports directly to the Coordinator, Inuvik THARP, under the leadership of the Community Wellness Program Manager.
Note: This position is not equivalent to a safety role in construction, trades, or industrial environments. Rather, it is a residential-based position focused on maintaining safety, security, and support within a therapeutic housing setting. Relevant experience may include work in shelters, group homes, reception, public or community-based environments where interpersonal awareness, a calm presence, and respectful engagement are essential.
ACCOUNTABILITIES
1. Safety and Security
Maintain a secure, trauma-informed environment for residents, staff, and visitors.
Conduct regular facility safety rounds, door and curfew checks, and ensure all exits remain secure.
Respond promptly and appropriately to emergencies, disturbances, or safety incidents.
Apply non-violent crisis intervention and de-escalation techniques when needed.
Record all incidents and observations in the shift log and incident reports.
Monitor and enforce resident and visitor rules while promoting dignity and respect.
2. Resident Support
Provide general support and encouragement to residents consistent with individual care plans.
Facilitate or supervised culturally grounded men’s programming
Assist residents with basic needs (e.g., meals, laundry, cleaning, daily routines).
Support resident orientation to facility expectations, curfews, and community guidelines.
Observe and report behavioural, emotional, or health changes to the Coordinator or Manager.
Promote cultural and wellness-based activities in collaboration with the program team.
3. Facility Operations
Perform cleaning and light maintenance tasks to maintain a clean, orderly, and safe environment.
Monitor supplies and report shortages or maintenance issues promptly.
Assist in food service, laundry, and facility readiness during shift transitions.
Ensure compliance with WSCC safety protocols and IRC’s internal safety policies.
4. Documentation and Communication
Maintain clear and detailed shift logs, incident reports, and resident observations.
Communicate effectively with team members during shift changes.
Participate in daily debriefings and contribute to a collaborative, respectful work environment.
5. Policy Compliance and Professional Conduct
Adhere to IRC HR Policies, including o vertime, s tandby & callback Pay
Maintain confidentiality of all resident and organizational information.
Follow IRC’s Alcohol, Cannabis, and Drug-Free Environment Policy.
Demonstrate professionalism, empathy, and cultural sensitivity in all interactions.
QUALIFICATIONS
Applicants must be/have:
Minimum high school diploma or equivalent.
Two (2) years of experience in a shelter, group home, residential, or community wellness setting preferred.
Certification in First Aid/CPR, Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (NVCI), Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) and WHMIS (or willingness to obtain).
Experience working with Indigenous populations and knowledge of Inuvialuit culture is a strong asset.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Understanding of trauma-informed and harm-reduction principles.
Strong interpersonal, observational, and problem-solving skills.
Ability to remain calm and professional during high-stress situations.
Sound judgment, dependability, and personal integrity.
Good written and verbal communication for documentation and reporting.
Ability to work all shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays in a 24/7 operation.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Hours: Rotational shifts (day, evening, and overnight) providing continuous coverage.
Work Environment: Residential setting; may involve exposure to crisis situations or emotional distress.
Physical Demands: Requires mobility for rounds, ability to respond quickly to emergencies, light physical work, physically able to lift and transport program supplies and equipment (up to 30 lbs) in support of daily operations and activities.
Standby & Callback: Employees may be assigned standby duty as per IRC's HR Policy.
Overtime: Compensated or banked per IRC's HR Policy.
