About the business/role/team

We’re looking for a Network DevOps Engineer to help modernise how our enterprise networks are engineered, secured and operated.

This role combines strong Network Engineering fundamentals with automation, DevOps and cyber security, providing an opportunity to work with modern networking technologies while helping us move towards more automated, secure and repeatable engineering practices.

You’ll contribute to significant initiatives across Software Defined Networking, Network as Code, Infrastructure as Code, vulnerability management, security hardening and cloud-connected networking.

What you’ll do

You’ll work across a complex enterprise network environment and:

  • Engineer and support LAN, WAN, data centre, network security and cloud-connected infrastructure.
  • Develop network automation using Ansible, Python and REST APIs.
  • Apply Infrastructure as Code and Network as Code approaches using Git and CI/CD practices.
  • Automate configuration management, compliance validation and vulnerability remediation.
  • Implement and continuously improve network hardening standards and security baselines.
  • Identify configuration drift and improve automated compliance validation.
  • Work closely with Cyber Security teams to assess and remediate network vulnerabilities.
  • Support the response to critical and emerging network vulnerabilities.
  • Contribute to network designs, automation code, implementation plans and technical documentation.
  • Support complex incidents, problem management and controlled production changes.
  • Integrate network platforms and automation with enterprise tooling such as ServiceNow/CMDB, Tenable and Microsoft Defender.

About the Programme

The broader Vulnerability Management & Hardening programme includes CMDB integration with Tenable and Defender and ServiceNow remediation workflows supporting vulnerability ownership, tracking, exceptions and reporting.

What you’ll bring

You’ll have strong enterprise Network Engineering experience and a passion for using automation to make networks more secure, reliable and easier to operate.

We’re looking for experience across:

  • Enterprise routing and switching, LAN/WAN and network security.
  • Complex, highly available production network environments.
  • Network automation using Python, Ansible and APIs.
  • Git, source control and modern DevOps engineering practices.
  • CI/CD, Infrastructure as Code and Network as Code.
  • Network hardening, vulnerability remediation and configuration compliance.
  • Troubleshooting complex network and infrastructure issues.
  • Working effectively across technical, security and delivery teams.

Experience we’d particularly value

Exposure to some of the following would be highly regarded:

  • Cisco Catalyst Center
  • Cisco ACI
  • Cisco ISE
  • Cisco Nexus / Nexus Dashboard
  • Cisco Software Defined Access and SD-WAN
  • F5 BIG-IP
  • Palo Alto and Fortinet
  • Terraform
  • Azure DevOps, Jenkins or GitHub Actions
  • ServiceNow and CMDB
  • Tenable and Microsoft Defender
  • Azure/cloud networking

These technology and capability areas are reflected in the VMH Network requirements, which combine Networking/NetOps, vulnerability management, automation, DevOps, compliance and platform integration.

Qualifications

A degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Engineering, Cyber Security or a related discipline, or equivalent relevant industry experience, would be advantageous.

Relevant Cisco, automation, cloud, DevOps, ITIL or cyber security certifications would also be well regarded.

Why join us?

This is an opportunity to:

  • Work with modern and resilient enterprise networking technologies.
  • Develop deeper capability across network automation and DevOps.
  • Build practical experience with Infrastructure as Code and Network as Code.
  • Expand your expertise in cyber security and vulnerability management.
  • Work with Software Defined Networking and cloud-connected environments.
  • Contribute to important network modernisation and security initiatives.
  • Build career pathways across networking, automation, security, cloud and platform engineering.
  • Use modern collaboration tools to work effectively in a hybrid and flexible environment.

Your team

You’ll join Network Services and work alongside Network Engineers and technical specialists, collaborating with Cyber Security, Architecture, Infrastructure, delivery teams and technology partners.

You’ll play a hands-on role in evolving Network Services towards more automated, secure, resilient and repeatable engineering practices.

Main changes: I made the advertisement more candidate-facing, reduced internal programme language, brought the career proposition forward, and made Network + DevOps the central identity of the role rather than presenting automation as simply something the successful candidate could learn.
