Nurse Tech (NT) – – Resource Pool

Departmental Description

It is the goal of the Resource Pool department to assist with staffing needs throughout the hospital by providing supplemental Registered Nurses, Nurse Techs, Nurse Aides, or Certified Nursing Assistants as requested by the nursing units. The Resource Pool department assists with staffing licensed and non-licensed staff for Critical Care and Med-Surg departments

Patient populations differ based on area staffed and the clinical clusters include:

Med-Surg RN: 3E, 3W, GT/SCU, 4E, 4W, Cardiac ICCU, 5W, Med-Surg ICCU, SWCC, OPS, and Endoscopy

Critical Care RN: MICU, TSICU, BICU, CVICU, Neuro ICU, COPS, Endoscopy, SWCC, EC and PACU.

Non-licensed staff are assigned to nursing units throughout the hospital according to established clinical competency and identified needs.

Job Summary:

Students working as nurse technicians are responsible for providing basic patient care under the supervision of a nurse. Nurse tech duties generally include observing patients, recording their vital signs, and reporting any changes in their condition.

Qualifications

A nursing student (RN program) who has completed half of their nursing curriculum and clinical experience.

Must have a clinical instructor complete Nurse Tech skills validation form

Must provide copy of current nursing transcript

Must maintain a current BLS certification from American Heart Association

JOB SUMMARY:

The Nursing Technician will perform tasks involving specified services for patients delegated by a Licensed Nurse. Has a working knowledge of organizational and nursing policies.

REPORTS TO: Lynnlee Butler

JOB SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:

I. Clinical Standards

Quality Patient Care- Provide quality patient care adhering to safety practices and proper clinical documentation. Quickly adjusts to quality initiatives and change. Contributes to the success of the nursing and unit specific strategic plans.

Reporting and Documentation

Hospital Wide Quality Metrics -

Inpatient Satisfaction “Likelihood to Recommend" (Non-nursing department use house wide score; Nursing units use department specific score)

NRC: Ambulatory Surgery - Departments use specific results (OPS, GI, Cath, and IR)

NRC: Individual Department results

Quality Measurement: Did staff wash their hands?

Stewardship- Cost Center actual expenses in comparison to flex budget

II. Professional Growth & Development

Staff Meeting Attendance

Development of Nursing Profession

III. Patient Safety and Quality Outcomes (NDNQI quality data – Units that do not monitor specific indicators will use the hospital wide scoring for the year)

- Performance/Evaluation Criteria: Below 25th percentile, Below the mean, Below the 50th percentile, above the 75th percentile, or above the 90th percentile

Falls with Injury

Hospital Acquired Pressure Ulcer

Catheter Associated Urinary Tract Infection (CAUTI)

Central Line Associated Blood Stream Infection (CLABSI)

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

A registered nursing student who has completed half of their nursing curriculum and clinical experience.

REQUIRED LICENSURES/CERTIFICATIONS/REGISTRATIONS:

Nurse Extern Requirements. Copy of NT Checklist provided by Nurse Recruitment/Copy of Nursing Transcript

SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

The Nurse Tech Technical Procedure Privileging Form details procedures the employee is expected to perform and must be completed by the end of the 3-month probationary period. Age specific knowledge is required when needed for appropriate patient care.

INTERACTION WITH OTHER DEPARTMENTS AND OTHER RELATIONSHIPS:

The position requires close interaction with other ancillary departments in order to facilitate a quality multi-disciplinary approach to patient care.

PHYSICAL CAPABILITIES:

Work is of medium demand. Standing, walking most of the time on duty. Lifting and pushing patients, carts, and wheelchairs. Good tactile sensations are necessary for checking patients. Talking and hearing to converse with patients and staff members. Near visual acuity for accurate reading of gauges and thermometers and for recording on patients' charts.

ENVIRONMENTAL/WORKING CONDITIONS:

Works inside. Hours of duty may be irregular with covering various shifts. Exposure to blood borne pathogens is of high risk.
