Description

NAYA Family Center is looking for a dependable, team-oriented Kitchen Assistant to join our Kitchen team on an on-call basis. This is a great opportunity for someone who enjoys working with people, takes pride in creating welcoming spaces, and wants to contribute to a kitchen that serves healthy, nutritious meals to Native youth, Elders, staff, and community members. Working alongside the Kitchen Manager, you’ll support daily meal preparation and service, including preparing and presenting traditional Native American dishes and cuisine. You’ll also help with meals for large events, small-scale catering for administrative meetings and trainings, and other kitchen needs as they arise.'

You’ll play an important role in keeping the kitchen clean, organized, safe, and ready to serve our community. This includes food preparation, cleaning, proper food storage and handling, and maintaining kitchen equipment and work areas in accordance with health and sanitation standards. Please note, this is a temporary, limited-duration, on-call position with availability generally between 8:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., with occasional evenings and weekends as assigned. The position pays $22–$25 per hour, commensurate with experience.

  • Who You Are
  • - You have at least six months of experience working in food service.

- You have a current Food Handler’s Certification.

- You understand and can follow oral and written instructions and established food preparation and sanitation procedures.

- You communicate effectively and work respectfully with people from diverse backgrounds.

- You bring strong active listening and interpersonal skills and enjoy being part of a team.

- You have knowledge of Native American history and an understanding of the diversity of the local American Indian/Alaska Native community and the Urban Indian experience.

- Experience working with diverse populations, particularly within an urban or reservation Native American community, tribe, board, or other Native organization, is strongly preferred.

- At least six months of customer service experience is preferred.

- Some high school education is preferred.

  • What You'll Do
  • - Support the Kitchen Manager with daily meal preparation, presentation, and service for students, Elders, staff, and community members.

- Prepare food in accordance with proper procedures for storage, handling, preparation, cooking, and service of food in large quantities.

- Assist with the preparation and presentation of traditional Native American dishes and cuisine.

- Support food service for large events, small-scale catering, administrative meetings, trainings, and other NAYA activities.

- Maintain a clean, organized, and sanitary kitchen by properly cleaning and caring for utensils, equipment, and work areas.

- Follow kitchen safety, sanitation, and food handling standards.

- Build positive working relationships with NAYA staff, vendors, and community members.

- Participate in kitchen staff meetings, trainings, and other meetings as directed.

- Maintain confidentiality and contribute to a safe and welcoming environment for community members and staff.

- Support other kitchen and NAYA Family Center activities as assigned.
