The Opportunity:
Looking for the next step in your accounting career? CACI is seeking an Operational Accountant (OA) to join our team and support the financial management and accounting of government contracts across the organization.
The Operational Accountant plays a critical role in ensuring accurate project setup, revenue recognition, and financial reporting across multiple contract types, including Cost-Plus-Fixed-Fee (CPFF), Time and Materials (T&M), and Firm-Fixed-Price (FFP). This position maintains ownership of assigned projects from contract inception through contract completion, excluding formal contract closeout, ensuring project financial data is accurately established, revenue is recognized in accordance with applicable accounting standards, and financial records remain complete and reliable throughout the project lifecycle.
The OA is responsible for establishing projects in Deltek Costpoint, evaluating contract terms and funding requirements, determining appropriate revenue recognition methodologies, and performing monthly revenue recognition activities. The role also includes analyzing billed and unbilled receivables, preparing financial schedules and reports, recording journal entries, and researching variances or discrepancies to ensure the integrity of project financial information.
This is an excellent opportunity for an accounting professional seeking to deepen their knowledge of government contract accounting, revenue recognition, and project financial management while developing expertise in a collaborative, mission-focused environment.
Responsibilities:
- Revenue Recognition: Perform monthly revenue recognition for assigned projects across all contract types, including CPFF, T&M, and FFP. Evaluate contract terms, deliverables, funding structures, and performance obligations to determine the appropriate scope, methodology, and pattern of revenue recognition in accordance with applicable accounting standards and company policies.
- Project Setup and Maintenance: Establish and maintain projects in Deltek Costpoint, ensuring accurate contract and project configuration, billing and revenue recognition setup, funding assignments, contract ceilings, and other required financial attributes. Review contract documentation to ensure project setup accurately reflects contractual requirements.
- End-to-End Project Accounting: Maintain accounting ownership of assigned projects from initial setup through contract completion, excluding formal contract closeout. Monitor project activity throughout the lifecycle, ensure financial information remains accurate and current, and identify and resolve accounting or setup issues as they arise.
- Billed and Unbilled Receivables Analysis: Continuously monitor and analyze billed and unbilled receivables to validate balances, identify unusual trends, investigate discrepancies, and resolve outstanding items. Partner with Billing and Program Finance to address issues affecting receivables, revenue recognition, and financial reporting.
- Journal Entries and General Ledger Support: Prepare, review, and record journal entries related to revenue recognition and other project accounting activities. Ensure entries are appropriately supported, accurately calculated, and recorded in the correct accounting period.
- Contract Review and Accounting Analysis: Review contract documentation, modifications, funding updates, and other relevant information to assess their impact on project setup, revenue recognition, billing, and financial reporting. Apply accounting knowledge and judgment to resolve complex issues and maintain accurate project records.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work closely with Billing, Project Managers, Program Finance Analysts, and other internal stakeholders to research and resolve questions related to project setup, contract funding, billing configuration, revenue recognition, and accounting discrepancies.
- Audit Support and Internal Controls: Review, coordinate, and provide supporting documentation for internal and external audits. Respond to audit inquiries, research identified issues, and ensure accounting activities comply with established policies, procedures, internal controls, and applicable accounting standards.
- Reconciliation and Issue Resolution: Research and resolve discrepancies between project accounting records, billing activity, revenue recognition, and general ledger balances. Identify root causes and implement corrective actions to improve accuracy and prevent recurring issues.
- Process Improvement: Identify opportunities to improve accounting processes, streamline recurring activities, strengthen documentation, and increase the accuracy and efficiency of project accounting and financial reporting.
- Additional Responsibilities: Support special projects, reporting initiatives, system enhancements, and other accounting-related activities as assigned.
Qualifications:
Required:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field, with a minimum of three years of related accounting or finance experience.
- Working knowledge of U.S. government contract types, including CPFF, T&M, and FFP, and their associated accounting and revenue recognition requirements.

- Demonstrated analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to research discrepancies, interpret financial data, and resolve accounting issues.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to maintaining accurate, complete, and well-documented financial records.
- Ability to manage multiple projects, prioritize competing demands, and meet recurring monthly and quarterly deadlines.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams.
Desired:
- Experience using Deltek Costpoint for project setup, revenue recognition, billing configuration, and project accounting.
- Experience with IBM Cognos or other financial reporting and business intelligence tools.
