Job Description:
The Oracle/PostgreSQL Database Administrator is responsible for the administration, reliability, security, recoverability, and performance of mission-critical database platforms supporting enterprise applications and services. This role operates within the Technology Operations team with primary accountability for Incident Management, Change Management, Problem Management, Database Security, Compliance, and Operational Excellence.
The successful candidate will possess strong expertise in Oracle and PostgreSQL database technologies, including high availability, backup and recovery, replication, performance tuning, automation, patch management, audit readiness, and security controls. The role requires a proactive problem solver who can lead complex incident resolution, conduct root cause analysis, drive automation initiatives, and continuously improve database reliability and operational efficiency across enterprise environments.
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES:
Database Administration & Operations
- Administer, monitor, maintain, and support Oracle and PostgreSQL databases across production, non-production, cloud, and on-premises environments.
- Ensure high availability, performance, recoverability, security, and operational stability of database platforms.
- Perform database installation, configuration, upgrades, migrations, cloning, provisioning, decommissioning, and lifecycle management activities.
- Manage database storage, schemas, users, privileges, data integrity, and capacity planning.
- Support highly available and mission-critical database environments with strict uptime and recoverability requirements.
Incident Management
- Lead technical diagnosis and resolution of database-related incidents and service disruptions.
- Act as a senior escalation point for Severity 1, Severity 2, and high-impact production incidents.
- Restore service quickly while minimizing business impact and operational risk.
- Collaborate with application, infrastructure, network, security, and vendor support teams during incident management activities.
- Participate in 24x7 on-call support rotations and provide timely incident response.
Problem Management
- Conduct detailed root cause analysis (RCA) for recurring and high-severity incidents.
- Identify underlying systemic issues and implement permanent corrective actions.
- Develop preventative measures to improve platform stability and reliability.
- Create and maintain troubleshooting guides, runbooks, knowledge articles, and operational procedures.
- Drive continuous service improvement initiatives focused on reducing operational risk and increasing resiliency.
Change Management
- Plan, assess, implement, and validate database-related changes in accordance with enterprise change management processes.
- Perform risk assessments, impact analyses, implementation planning, validation testing, and rollback planning.
- Support infrastructure upgrades, database upgrades, cloud migrations, platform refreshes, and technology modernization initiatives.
- Ensure all changes meet operational readiness, security, and compliance requirements before implementation.
Database Patching & Lifecycle Management
- Plan and execute Oracle and PostgreSQL database patching activities, including Release Updates (RU), Release Update Revisions (RUR), Critical Patch Updates (CPU), security patches, and version upgrades.
- Maintain database platform currency and compliance with enterprise vulnerability management standards.
- Validate patch deployments through testing, monitoring, and post-implementation verification.
- Develop automation and standardized procedures for patch deployment and validation activities.
- Support platform modernization and end-of-life remediation initiatives.
Performance Monitoring & Tuning
- Monitor and optimize database performance, availability, utilization, and capacity.
- Analyze SQL execution plans and optimize queries, indexes, partitioning strategies, and database configurations.
- Diagnose performance bottlenecks across application, database, storage, and infrastructure layers.
- Conduct proactive health assessments and performance reviews.
- Partner with development teams to improve application database interactions and overall system performance.
Backup, Recovery & Business Continuity
- Administer Oracle Recovery Manager (RMAN) and Oracle Zero Data Loss Recovery Appliance (ZDLRA) environments.
- Design and maintain backup, recovery, retention, and replication strategies.
- Perform backup validation, recovery exercises, disaster recovery testing, and restoration activities.
- Ensure compliance with Recovery Point Objectives (RPO) and Recovery Time Objectives (RTO).
- Support business continuity and disaster recovery planning initiatives.
Replication, High Availability & Data Movement
- Administer and support Oracle GoldenGate replication environments.
- Configure, monitor, troubleshoot, and optimize GoldenGate Extract, Pump, and Replicat processes.
- Support real-time data replication, cloud migration, database upgrades, and platform migration initiatives.
- Manage Oracle Data Guard, RAC, PostgreSQL Streaming Replication, PostgreSQL Logical Replication, and high availability technologies.
- Troubleshoot replication lag, synchronization issues, failovers, and data consistency challenges.
Database Security
- Implement and maintain database security controls in accordance with enterprise standards and regulatory requirements.
- Manage authentication, authorization, role-based access controls, encryption, certificates, wallets, and privileged access management.
- Support database hardening, security reviews, penetration testing remediation, and vulnerability assessments.
- Manage Oracle Wallet, Oracle Key Vault, SSL/TLS encryption, Transparent Data Encryption (TDE), and related security technologies.
- Support cyber security investigations, threat remediation, and security incident response activities.
Audit, Compliance & Risk Management
- Support internal and external audits by providing evidence, controls documentation, compliance reporting, and remediation plans.
- Ensure database platforms comply with regulatory, corporate governance, and security requirements.
- Monitor compliance controls and remediate identified gaps.
- Participate in risk assessments, control testing, audit reviews, and governance activities.
- Implement and maintain database auditing, activity monitoring, access reviews, and compliance reporting.
- Maintain audit-ready documentation, procedures, standards, and operational records.
Automation & Operational Excellence
- Design, develop, and implement automation solutions to reduce manual effort and improve operational efficiency.
- Develop scripts and automation frameworks using Python, Shell Scripting, PowerShell, Ansible, Terraform, SQL, PL/SQL, and PostgreSQL tools.
- Automate routine operational tasks including:
- Health checks
- Database provisioning
- Backup validation
- Monitoring and alerting
- Patch deployment
- Compliance reporting
- Recovery validation
- Incident remediation
