Job Posting Title:

Outside Readers

Job Description:

ABOUT POMONA COLLEGE: Located near Los Angeles, California, Pomona College is widely regarded as one of the nation's premier liberal arts colleges. Established in 1887, Pomona College is known for small classes, a challenging curriculum, close relationships between students and faculty, and a range of student research and leadership opportunities. Pomona is a member of The Claremont Colleges.

POSITION SUMMARY: The Office of Admission at Pomona College seeks thoughtful and detail-oriented individuals to serve as Outside Readers. Reporting to the Associate Dean of Admissions who oversees reader training and the reading process, Outside Readers assists in the evaluation process for the College’s entering first-year class. Outside Readers play a key role in our Committee Based Evaluation (CBE) process, where applications are reviewed collaboratively to provide a comprehensive assessment. This process ensures fair and thorough assessments of applicants’ academic achievements, personal qualities, and potential contributions to the campus community. Independent education consultants, current high school counselors, teachers, or anyone working directly with high school seniors will not be considered for this position.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The Outside Readers perform the following essential duties:

  • Evaluate applications holistically, considering academic performance, extracurricular engagement, personal essays, and letters of recommendation.
  • Participate in the collaborative review process by contributing to the written evaluations that support informed admissions recommendations.
  • Handle sensitive applicant information with strict confidentiality and adhere to all institutional policies and federal guidelines.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Experience in education, counseling, writing, or related fields strongly desired.
  • Familiarity with a liberal arts curriculum strongly preferred.
  • Strong writing, critical thinking, and time management skills.
  • Previous admission or application review experience a plus, but not required. Training will be provided.

REQUIRED HOURS: Outside Reader must be available to read in pair with an admissions officer between 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday-Friday. Overtime, holiday, weekend, and evening work hours may be required. Regular hours may vary due to the needs of the office.

ADDITIONAL POSITION DETAILS: This is a full-time, temporary, non-benefit-eligible position. The hourly rate for this role is $25.00 per hour. The specific factors that the College will consider when offering a salary to an individual will include, but not be limited to education, training, relevant prior experience, and performance in prior role. All staff positions are ineligible for visa or permanent resident card sponsorship. As a California employer, Pomona College requires all employees to be residents of California.

  • While this is a remote position, the Outside Reader must reside in California.
  • Outside Readers are expected to commit 30-35 hours per week.
  • Training will take place December 7-10. Reading will take place December 15-17, and January 5-29.

ADA/OSHA: This job description defines the essential job duties of this position. The College expects that employees hired for this position can perform the essential functions of this job without imposing risk of substantial harm to the health or safety of themselves or others. It may also include marginal functions, generally defined within Title I of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).

DISCLAIMER: This job description has been designed to indicate the general nature and level of work performed by employees within this classification. It is not designed to contain or be interpreted as a comprehensive inventory of all duties, responsibilities and qualifications required of employees assigned to this position. When duties and responsibilities change and develop, the College will review this job description and make changes of business necessity.
