About the Opportunity
About the Opportunity
The Department of Bioengineering, College of Engineering, invites applications for a Part-Time Lecturer to teach BIOE 6100 Medical Physiology, a graduate course offered in the Fall 27 and Spring 28 semesters. The course is taught on ground at the Boston Main Campus, with an online section attached of students who participate remotely. Additional compensation is provided for teaching the online section.
BIOE 6100 introduces the mathematical foundations of physiological systems and their integrated behavior in the human body in health and disease. The course offers a fast-paced survey of selected physiological subsystems, such as muscle, cardiovascular, pulmonary, renal, gastrointestinal, and endocrine physiology, with an emphasis on quantitative modeling and problem solving. The course builds from basic science principles and integrates them to the tissue and organ level, and it requires students to apply mathematical approaches to analyze physiological function and dysfunction.
Responsibilities
The Part-Time Lecturer will teach BIOE 6100 to graduate students in Bioengineering and related programs, serving both the on-ground section and its attached online section. Responsibilities include preparing and delivering lectures, developing course materials and quantitative problem sets, designing and grading examinations, and evaluating student performance across both sections. The lecturer will ensure online students have an equivalent learning experience, including access to lecture recordings or live streams, course materials, and assessments through the university’s learning management system, and will offer office hours in a format accessible to online students. The lecturer will coordinate with the Department of Bioengineering on course content and learning outcomes to maintain consistency across semesters. Opportunities to teach in either or both semesters may be available depending on departmental needs.
Qualifications
A Ph.D. in bioengineering, biomedical engineering, physiology, or a closely related field is required; candidates holding an M.D. with substantial quantitative training will also be considered. Candidates must have demonstrated expertise in quantitative or systems physiology, including the mathematical modeling of physiological processes such as muscle mechanics, cardiovascular and pulmonary function, and renal transport. Prior experience teaching physiology or a related quantitative course at the graduate or advanced undergraduate level is strongly preferred. Must have strong, effective verbal and written communication skills and the ability to engage students from diverse academic backgrounds, including engineers with limited prior coursework in biology. Experience teaching in online or hybrid formats, or familiarity with instructional technology such as Canvas and lecture capture tools, is preferred. Successful applicants will have research, industry, or clinical experience and college teaching experience in a large, diverse higher education institution.
Application Instructions
Please submit a cover letter, a CV, and a list of all previous courses taught, including the institution and level (undergraduate or graduate). A teaching statement or sample syllabus is welcome but not required.
