School of Art, Design and Media
Nanyang Technological University, Singapore
Part-Time Lecturer for AP6403 Games for Society
The School of Art, Design and Media (ADM) at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, invites qualified candidates to apply as Part-time Lecturer for AP6403 Games for Society. The Part-time Lecturer is expected to teach a Postgraduate course commencing in January 2027.
AP6403 Games for Society is a core course that examines the increasingly significant roles digital games and game thinking play in society. Students will explore applications of digital games across areas such as education, training, simulation, health and well-being, awareness-raising, lobbying, social services, and social innovation. They will critically consider how game mechanics, gamification, and broader forms of game thinking shape digital and screen-based interactions, and how these approaches can be applied in response to genuine societal needs.
Drawing on this research and exploration, students will develop a prototype concept for a game that responds to an identified need in society. Through this process, they will develop an understanding of the social dimensions of game design and consider how games can communicate, engage, influence, support, and create meaningful experiences for different communities and contexts. The learning developed in this course will provide a foundation that students can apply to future game projects throughout the programme.
Applicants for this position will be able to demonstrate expertise in the social, cultural, and applied dimensions of digital games, together with an understanding of how games and game thinking can be used in contexts such as education, health and well-being, advocacy, simulation, public engagement, social services, and social innovation. They should demonstrate a strong commitment to guiding students in researching genuine societal needs, critically examining existing applications of games, and translating their findings into thoughtful, relevant, and socially informed game concepts.
The successful applicant will support students in developing prototype concepts that demonstrate a clear understanding of their intended audience, social context, purpose, and potential impact, while encouraging critical reflection on the opportunities, limitations, and responsibilities involved in designing games for society.
Candidates should have a relevant Master’s and/or PhD in Game Design, Interactive Media, or a related field with a track record of creative practice in the gaming industry. Past teaching experience at the Undergraduate Level is preferred. Candidates with a Bachelor degree in Game Design or a related field and sufficient and relevant industry experience (such as e.g.,lead design/animation or indie development) may also be considered in exceptional cases.
