Grade 4 (Hourly) Position Description:

The University of Louisville Police Department seeks qualified candidates for three classifications: Patrol Officer Recruit, Patrol Officer I, and Patrol Officer II (Lateral).

These positions provide law enforcement and public safety services to the University community through patrol, enforcement of applicable laws and regulations, crime prevention, emergency response, criminal investigations, evidence collection, traffic control, community engagement, and related police activities.

Applicants will be considered for the appropriate classification based on their law enforcement training, sworn status, Kentucky Peace Officer Professional Standards (POPS) certification, and qualifying full-time sworn law enforcement experience.

Police Officer Recruit is an entry-level classification for candidates who have not completed a law enforcement basic training academy.

Police Officer I is intended for academy-certified, sworn officers with less than three years of full-time sworn law enforcement experience.

Police Officer II (Lateral) is intended for academy-certified officers with at least three years of full-time sworn law enforcement experience who meet Kentucky POPS certification requirements.

This evergreen posting allows candidates to apply through one recruitment process and be considered for the classification for which they qualify.

Candidates will be placed at the Patrol Officer Recruit, Patrol Officer I, or Patrol Officer II level based on the candidate’s qualifications. Applicants who are or have been employed as peace officers in Kentucky must disclose whether they are subject to an employment contract or statutory reimbursement obligation (for example, under KRS 70.290 or 16.050(9)) and identify the agency entitled to reimbursement (either the current agency or initial hiring agency). Any offer to such an applicant may be conditioned on either (a) a written release of that obligation, signed by an official with authority to bind the entitled agency, or (b) University approval to pay the reimbursement.
