Description

We transform lives.

Phoenix Rescue Mission is a place of hope, healing, and new beginnings for men, women, and children facing hunger, homelessness, addiction, and other life-controlling issues. We follow Christ's example of servant-leadership and teamwork, and we are a certified Best Christian Workplace. God is doing important work here, and we'd love for you to be part of it.

As People Operations and Payroll Manager, you are the trusted partner our leaders call when a conversation gets hard, and the steady expert who keeps our people supported, treated fairly, and paid accurately.

WHY THIS ROLE MATTERS

Our team serves people in crisis, and they deserve to work for leaders who are well supported and to be paid correctly. You will be the steady, expert voice on employee relations, compliance, and payroll, with real ownership and room to grow your influence as trust builds.

WHAT YOU WILL DO

  • Coach managers and directors. Guide leaders through attendance, performance, and performance improvement plan conversations with empathy, clarity, and consistency, so directors bring the Chief of Staff strategic questions rather than routine ones.
  • Protect compliance. Stay current on employment law, update policies and practices, manage workers’ compensation and unemployment claims, run the drug and alcohol testing program, and work with outside counsel as needed.
  • Own payroll. Process bi-weekly and bonus payroll, including garnishments, and ensure accuracy through audits, reporting, and proactive checks.
  • Be the go-to for employees. Answer questions on HR, payroll, and routine benefits.
  • Keep records accurate. Maintain the HRIS (Paylocity), personnel and benefit files, and benefits updates.
  • Support the full employee lifecycle. Welcome new hires after onboarding, and manage terminations, exit interviews, and offboarding.
  • Manage HR vendor relationships.

Requirements

WHAT YOU BRING

  • Three to five years of progressive experience in HR operations, payroll, and employee relations
  • Hands-on payroll processing in an HRIS such as Paylocity
  • Working knowledge of employment law, including FLSA, FMLA, and ADA
  • Bachelor’s degree in HR, business, or a related field preferred; equivalent experience considered
  • HR or payroll certification (PHR, SHRM-CP, CPP, or similar) preferred
  • Nonprofit or mission-driven experience preferred
  • Proficiency with Microsoft 365
  • A personal and growing relationship with Jesus Christ, and willingness to sign the Mission’s Statement of Faith and Lifestyle

WHO WILL LOVE THIS JOB

  • You enjoy being a trusted advisor who can handle sensitive situations with composure and discretion.
  • You think critically, use sound judgment, and work well alongside a small HR team.
  • You take pride in accuracy and in knowing the numbers are right.
  • You see HR excellence as ministry and want to work in a Christ-centered community.

WHAT WE OFFER

Work that matters, alongside a team that celebrates one another

Medical, dental, and vision coverage

401(k) with employer match

Generous paid time off

Paid holidays: 12
