About the role

Code Metal is growing quickly across Boston, San Francisco, Washington DC and distributed, and our People team is building the foundations to match. As our People Operations Generalist, you will own core day to day People Team execution: onboarding & offboarding, benefits and compliance, the employee lifecycle programs that run on our calendar, and the systems and data that underlie it all. You will report to our Director of People Operations and work closely with Recruiting, Business Operations, Finance, IT, and Security.

This role is for a builder. Many of our processes are still young, and you will have the agency and space to improve them and document them so they scale.

What You Will Be Doing

Employee lifecycle execution. Own onboarding, offboarding, job changes, and background checks from signed offer to last day. Keep Justworks and our employee roster accurate so every system downstream can trust the data.

Execute our people programs. Run the operating side of our twice a year feedback cycle, compensation reviews, and new hire onboarding: timelines, manager packets, reminders, and the follow through that closes each cycle cleanly.

Administer benefits and leave. Be the first stop for benefits questions, run open enrollment and benefits execution, and manage leaves of absence.

Keep us compliant as we hire in new states. Own I-9s, required postings and trainings, state registrations, and handbook and policy updates. Partner with Security and our Facility Security Officer so our records meet the standards our government work requires.

Build the systems we'll grow on. Help evaluate the transition from PEO to HRIS, roll out new systems, and turn manual steps into documented, automated workflows.

Turn people data into answers. Build and maintain headcount, org, and program reports.

Be a trusted resource. Answer employee and manager questions with discretion, document processes, notice patterns, and fix the root cause when the same question comes up twice.

Key Skills & Qualifications

4+ years in People Operations or HR generalist roles, including time at a fast growing startup

Hands on experience running core HR/People operations on a PEO or HRIS

Working knowledge of U.S. employment compliance across multiple states, including Massachusetts & California

You've run execution for at least one people program end to end, such as open enrollment, a review cycle, or an onboarding program

Comfort in Google Sheets, reconciling data across systems and building reports, and storytelling with data

Strong judgment and discretion with confidential information, including knowing when to follow a policy and when to flag an exception

Excellent verbal & written communications and a warm, clear, and accessible communication and employee engagement style.

Nice to have

Experience at a defense, government contracting, or other regulated company

You've helped select or implement an HRIS or other complex software tool

Experience running communications for people programs, for example, rollouts, all hands segments, or manager toolkits

Automation, no code, or AI tools (Zapier, Google Apps Script, and the like) that take manual work off the team's plate
