Founded in 2002, KIPP Memphis serves over 1,200 K-12 students in our three North Memphis schools and almost 900 alumni on their journeys to-and-through college with our KIPP Forward Program.

Job Description:

Job Status: Full-time, Non-Exempt

Start Date: Immediate opening

Open Position Detail: MUST PROVIDE A VALID TN TEACHING LICENSE

High School

Reporting to the Principal, Substitute Teachers perform many organizational and classroom management tasks to support both KIPP Memphis teachers and students. Substitute Teachers will perform additional duties, as necessary, to ensure that all students learn.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Effectively communicate and coordinate with the instructor to assist in daily lesson plans
  • Aid in preparing materials to be used for projects, including art and science
  • Provide individual assistance to children in small groups to ensure an understanding of concepts
  • Strictly adhere to the school's rules and policies
  • Ensure the safety of the students within the classroom, on field trips, and throughout the campus
  • Assist teachers in reviewing, grading, and recording homework and tests
  • Maintain, observe, and assess each student's progress through assessments, and be aware of students who need more one-on-one guidance

Requirements

Required:

  • Bachelor's Degree
  • Must have an active Tennessee state teaching license
  • Ability to commit to a long-term assignment
  • Basic understanding of childhood development and steps to support children of various ages
  • Ability to effectively communicate with teachers and parents regarding students' progress and behavior
  • Strong organizational skills are essential to aid in preparing materials for several daily lesson plans
  • Personal accountability and patience are essential when working with children daily in a classroom environment
  • Ability to prioritize activities quickly and support the teacher in exceptionally busy instances
  • Basic writing, math, and science skills are necessary to assist in teaching students and answering their questions
  • Ability to manage potentially challenging behavior from students and maintain a professional and patient demeanor
  • Experience fostering positive relationships with children and adults in a learning environment

Preferred:

Experience working with children in a similar demographic area

Additional Information:

ADA Requirements:

  • Prolonged periods of standing and actively monitoring student behavior while teaching
  • Must be able to lift to 15 pounds at times
  • Must be able to traverse the classroom and adjust height by bending or leaning to teach each child
  • Must be able to facilitate classroom transitions by walking through hallways and up and down stairs with students

Compensation: $30/hour

Length of contract: October 2026 - May 2027
