DEPARTMENT SUMMARY: St. Charles Trauma & Acute Care Surgical Services currently employs surgeons board certified in surgical critical care with varying levels of experience as well as physician assistants and nurse practitioners. The current full-time commitment includes 156 clinical shifts. Surgeons are expected to comply with all Oregon State Trauma program requirements and expected to actively participate in quality improvement projects and community outreach education.
POSITION OVERVIEW: Surgeon is responsible for providing medical, surgical treatment, and follow up for patients treated with severe and life-threatening traumatic injuries, critical illness or emergency general surgery conditions. Surgeon will work with providers in other specialties, as needed, to stabilize and treat patients. Surgeon assesses and manages patients following established standards and practices.
Work schedule: Varied shift work in the hospital and in clinics that equate to 156 shifts per year for full time. This includes day shifts in the role of Trauma Surgeon, Surgical ICU and Emergency General Surgeon. Night shifts cover Trauma and ICU or emergency general surgery.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES:
Clinical Expectations:
- Examines, diagnoses, and surgically treats critically injured patients and patients with emergency general surgery conditions.
- Performs patient examinations, obtains and records pertinent medical history, subjective, and objective findings.
- Orders and interprets appropriate laboratory, imaging, and other diagnostic procedures. Interprets and integrates data to determine diagnosis, and therapeutic plan.
- Administers and prescribes medications in compliance with state law and practice guidelines.
- Orders and performs appropriate medical and surgical procedures in accordance with State law and practice guidelines.
- Instructs patient and family regarding medications and treatments.
- Educates patients regarding health, illness and injury prevention, and healing. Recommends community resources to meet patient and family needs.
- Maintains and reviews patient records, charts, and other pertinent information, documenting clearly and concisely.
- Triages patient telephone calls, providing consultation as needed.
- Communicates effectively with colleagues, patients, physicians, and administration. Maintains quality of clinical practice by selecting appropriate avenues for professional growth. Maintains CME requirements and certifications per trauma center and State requirements.
- Participates in and supports quality and performance improvement activities; identifies areas and functions where patients, staff, and physicians need information.
- Medical performance issues will be directed to the medical director of the service.
- May perform additional duties of similar complexity within the organization, as required or assigned.
Administrative Expectations:
- Acts as a leader and supports departmental goals and the vision, mission and values of the St. Charles Health System in all respects.
- Remains familiar with the organization structure, communications systems and billing process, completing billing and coding documentation within time assigned.
- Keeps all licenses and appropriate certifications current and unrestricted to maintain privileges at a St. Charles Health System hospital sufficient to permit performance of job duties.
- Participates in provider meetings and assists in policy formation for SCHS and provider practice. Participates in administrative activities of the trauma service as required by Oregon statutes.
- Increases understanding and collaboration throughout the medical community.
- Maintains compliance with hospital’s Medical Staff Bylaws, Rules, and Regulations, as required by SCHS Board of Directors.

This includes introducing oneself and stating your purpose, asking the patient their preferred name, spending time with the patient to determine their care goals, active listening, and using skillful communications (appropriate touch, eye contact, etc.).
- Provides and maintains a safe environment for caregivers, patients and guests.
- Conducts all activities with the highest standards of professionalism and confidentiality. Complies with all applicable laws, regulations, policies and procedures, supporting the organization’s corporate integrity efforts by acting in an ethical and appropriate manner, reporting known or suspected violation of applicable rules, and cooperating fully with all organizational investigations and proceedings.
EDUCATION:
Required :
- Graduation from an accredited medical school.
- Successful completion of an accredited residency program in General Surgery.
- Successful completion of additional educational programs necessary to enable Physician to acquire and maintain privileges to perform the range of services contemplated. This includes board eligibility/certification in the specialty being practiced.
- Complete annual fire/safety, etc. education in-services as required.
- Attend mandatory educational offerings as described in SCHS policies/procedures and/or as required by other regulatory bodies.
- Complete annual CME as required to maintain license and appropriate Board certification. Complete in a timely manner assigned Computer Based Learning modules.
Preferred:
Fellowship training and board certification in Surgical Critical Care.
LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRATION:
Required :
- Current license as MD / DO.
- Board certified or eligible in General Surgery. Those applicants who are not board certified at the time of application, but who have completed their residency or fellowship training are required to become board certified within seven (7) years of residency or fellowship training.
- Unrestricted Federal DEA number.
- Unrestricted ability to participate in Medicare / Medicaid, or other federal or state governmental health care programs.
- Valid driver’s license and the ability to meet SCHS driving requirements. Current BLS certification.
- Current ACLS and ATLS certification.
- Additional certifications may be required based on privileges granted to provider by Medical Staff Services at SCHS Inpatient locations.
Preferred: Current unrestricted Oregon Medical License.
