Maximum Term/Fixed Term (Fixed Term)

Here at BNZ, it's about more than just banking. We work together in an agile, energising environment to create innovative solutions though our promise "If you can imagine a better future, let's find a way."

We support wellbeing, flexible working and have a generous leave offering. No two days are the same.

We have an exciting opportunity for an experienced Platform Lead to join our Core Ledger Replacement domain and help modernise the lending technology that supports innovative customer experiences, creating a lasting impact for New Zealanders. You will support and develop your team while balancing your focus on maximising the value delivered by the team.

Based in either Auckland or Wellington, this fixed-term opportunity runs through to October 2028, giving you the scope to make a meaningful contribution across a significant, multi-year transformation.

Mō te Tūranga | About the Role

We sat down with the Platform Manager and they told us the following about the role:

What are some of the day-to-day tasks the person in this role will complete?

You’ll work within an Agile product team, helping to shape and deliver solutions as part of BNZ’s Core Ledger Replacement programme. This includes:

  • Define and communicate a clear platform vision and strategy aligned with BNZ’s strategic goals, driving the platform team towards operational excellence.
  • Lead technical roles such as engineers and technical specialists through all employee lifecycle stages—attraction, recruitment, onboarding, development, retention, and offboarding. Foster a culture of trust, collaboration, and accountability to drive performance and alignment with business goals.
  • Utilise customer insights and foster collaboration between the platform team and end users to guide informed platform decisions that meet evolving needs.
  • Apply data analysis and metrics to support decisions that enhance platform reliability, performance, and usability.
  • Prioritise platform enhancements based on customer value, business impact, and resources, ensuring application management aligns with the Critical Hygiene Framework (CHF).

What is the most exciting thing about this opportunity?

Few opportunities give you the chance to help rebuild the engine room of a bank. Through Core Ledger Replacement, we’re modernising the lending technology at the heart of BNZ—moving from legacy systems to a modern, cloud-based core banking platform. The scale is significant, with the impact set to be felt across the entire organisation and through the experiences we deliver for our customers. If you’re excited by large-scale platform modernisation, enterprise integration, and building technology that will shape the future of lending at BNZ, we’d love to hear from you.

  • What is the team culture and environment like?
  • Our team operates in a collaborative and supportive environment where knowledge sharing, technical excellence, and continuous improvement are highly valued. Team members work closely together to solve complex problems, contribute ideas, and support each other's professional growth. Together we have a strong focus on quality, innovation, and delivering excellent outcomes.

What technical skills are required for this role?

This is an opportunity for an experienced Product Owner (or similar role) who has proven leadership experience and ideally an understanding of lending technology. Alongside this, you will bring:

Technical Knowledge: Understanding of software development processes and platform architecture.

Backlog Management: Expertise in creating, prioritising, and managing a product backlog effectively.

Data-Driven Decision Making: Ability to use data and KPIs to inform prioritisation and product decisions.

Agile Methodologies: Proficient in agile practices, including sprint planning and user story development.

What attributes will this person display in order to be successful in this role?

You'll bring strong stakeholder management and facilitation skills, with the ability to communicate clearly with both technical and non-technical audiences. You'll also have the confidence to challenge assumptions, navigate ambiguity, and help stakeholders make informed decisions.
