Quantum Control Systems FPGA Developer Internship 2027

IBM Quantum is seeking motivated engineering students to learn about and develop the world’s first large-scale, fault-tolerant quantum computer. You will work across software, firmware, FPGA development, embedded systems, control electronics, and system integration to support the design of logic units and embedded software for next-generation quantum computing systems. Develop, implement, and debug FPGA logic for quantum control and measurement systems. Integrate FPGA, embedded software, and hardware components into larger quantum systems. Develop software and automation tools for data collection, analysis, and lab instrumentation control. Debug embedded systems, ASICs, and low-level hardware/software interactions. Support qubit experiments, calibration routines, and system performance evaluations. Collaborate with physics, theory, hardware, PCB, ASIC, and deployment teams. Pursuing a Masters/or PhD degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Physics, or a related field. Experience with Python, Jupyter Notebooks, Git, Linux, and command-line environments. Experience designing or implementing digital logic on FPGAs. Familiarity with HDL development (Verilog, SystemVerilog, or VHDL). Experience with embedded systems and laboratory equipment. Strong debugging, problem-solving, and communication skills. Ability to learn new technologies quickly and work across disciplines. Experience with FPGA development tools such as Xilinx Vivado or Intel Quartus. Experience with microcontrollers and low-level programming. Familiarity with oscilloscopes, VNAs, spectrum analyzers, and related test equipment. Experience with Python-based test automation and instrumentation control (SCPI).
